BigBob Posted September 26, 2005 Posted September 26, 2005 I just put a Weber 12F125 in my Princeton Reverb and Im getting a bad octave like cone cry on the b&e strings above the 12th fret. what do you use to dope the surround? some say elmers some say no.
Jimbilly Posted September 26, 2005 Posted September 26, 2005 If it's a new speaker, maybe you should give it some break-in time? Like run a radio signal through it (w/ the bass turned down) for a day or two?
JohnnyB Posted September 27, 2005 Posted September 27, 2005 First, Jimbilly's right; give it some time to break in.Second, I don't think you'd ever want to put Elmer's on a speaker surround, because Elmer's dries rigid, and a speaker surround is supposed to be flexible.Third, why not call Weber and ask his advice?

Like run a radio signal through it (w/ the bass turned down) for a day or two? I've always wondered how to go about doing that. Do you just run a speaker cable from a radio's headphone out into the cabinet? If so, does the cabinet's ohm rating matter one way or another?I just popped some new speakers in a 4x12 (Eminence GB12s, which I don't believe are doped) and wouldn't mind giving this a try.
hardheartedbill Posted September 27, 2005 Posted September 27, 2005 I prefer to use a drum machine or looper pedal, the radio is to compressed, the station compresses the signal beyond the mastering, the drum machine/looper gives more transients and actually move the speaker, what you want for a break inps the doping I've seen looks a lot like rubber cement
BadgerDave Posted September 27, 2005 Posted September 27, 2005 I've done what Bill suggested. A drum machine directly into the amp, turned up pretty damn loud so the speakers move or it's not going to do any good. Leave it on for 8-10 hours a day, 3 days and the spakers will be nicely broken in. Weber speakers are very durable. You can crank the amp to the point where it's uncomfortably loud (maybe roll back the bass a bit) and you won't hurt them.

BadgerDave Posted September 27, 2005 Posted September 27, 2005 Would a Snoop Dogg CD work? Most definitely.or Bigee. Those would get you there in two days, I think.
tombo Posted September 27, 2005 Posted September 27, 2005 C'mon Dave......tell the truth. You're using your secret stash of John Mayer CDs exclusively for all your speaker doping. Ted told me
BadgerDave Posted September 27, 2005 Posted September 27, 2005 John Mayer? Might as well try to break them in with Yanni, Kenny G or Montovani! You need thump and dynamics, man - not elevator pap!Ahhhh, that felt good. I haven't busted on fern bar boy for at least a month.Has JM outlived his 15 minutes in Japan?

You need thump and dynamics, man - not elevator pap!Has JM outlived his 15 minutes in Japan? I'll send you over some of El Kabong's Jay Z collection. I think he's got some 50 Cent too. I dunno about JM's 15 minutes here. His CDs are at the rental places (as are all Top 40 releases) and he's been featured in the guitar mags. However, he's still got a looooong way to go before he is revered as much as Dimebag Darrell, George Lynch, Paul Gilbert, Marty Friedman, all the dark Northern European metal guys, Richie Kotzen, and of course Zakk Wylde. Quite a contrast to JM
MCChris Posted September 28, 2005 Posted September 28, 2005 good god, your decibel level keeps increasing.Next MWJ we'll all just bring more 4x12s for donations. the WALL LOL! No additional volume, hopefully better-sounding volume. My MWJ goal continues to be the complete blockage of the window with amps and cabs. Hasn't even come close to happening yet, so we keep trying.
MCChris Posted September 29, 2005 Posted September 29, 2005 Would a Snoop Dogg CD work? Most definitely.or Bigee. Those would get you there in two days, I think. So would running the CD player's headphone out into the effects return of one of my amps and then into the cab work?
Scottcrud Posted September 29, 2005 Posted September 29, 2005 just take the cab with new speakers to band practice and break them in that way, that's what I did and mine sound great. I do play in two very loud bands, so it didn't take long for mine to break in.
BigBob Posted September 30, 2005 Author Posted September 30, 2005 Gee guys, thanks for all the really great advise. now we can discuss the merits of breaking in acoustics in front of a stereo speaker : ) ( it works)
