Wiring a 3x12 Cab

Twisted Metal

Question

Posted

OK. so i picked up as 3x12 speaker cab (Odd I know) but the deal was too good to pass up. The only marking on this are an EDT logo......looks vintage. It has 3 8ohm speakers in it already but of course just mounted not wired. Whats the best way to wire this thing? (as I'm no wiring genius)

BTW my head has a switch for (4, 8 or 16 ohm)

Thanks

Randall has a 3 speaker cab that is 2x12 and 1x15 running 8 ohm. I think they wire two 12"-8 ohm in series for 16 ohm then run those in parallel with one 15"-16 ohm to bring back down to 8 ohm.

If they're all 8 ohm, run two in series to get 16 ohms, then run those in parallel with the 3rd. That should get you 5.3 ohms. Depending on the amp, a 4 or 8 ohm tap sould be just fine, almsot certainly an 8 ohm.

This is exactly what I did in college when I had a 4x12 with a blown speaker that I couldn't afford to replace. Set the amp to 4 ohms and all was good.

Keep in mind that the single speaker in that series/parallel arrangement will see 2/3 of the amp's power and the other two speakers wired in series with each other will together only see 1/3 of the amp's power. For example: 100W head= 67W into 8 ohm branch (single speaker) and 33W into 16 ohm branch (16.5W into each of the remaining 2 speakers).

Ok I think I get it.....if I run them using the series/parallel method,.....with my heads output of 120w I would be getting 40w of power to the two speakers and 80w to the single?

Well I checked them out, so two speakers are Jensen 50w units the single is a Fender 50w ( out of a Junior)......so that would mean the wattage would be too much for the single?
