Ipod attenuator needed.

Just wondering if anyone here can help

I've installed a power amp in my sons car and want to use the ipod/iphone as the only audio source via the large socket on the bottom (rather than the stereo headphone jack, this way I can recharge the ipod at the same time using just one connection).

Unfortunately it seems using this socket there's no way to control the ipods volume. The ipods volume control makes no difference hence my need for some sort of Stereo attenuator.

Ideally a small box with Stereo phono inputs and outputs and a single pot to control the level.

Anyone seen anything like this, I've had a quick scan on ebay but not spotted anything ideal yet.

Pretty handy with a soldering iron so I could build it myself if I knew the values of the parts to get (and had the time).

Rich.

It seems to me that the easiest and least expensive way to do this is to run the dock-to-USB-to 12V cigarette lighter to power the iPod, and use a separate mini-plug cable from the headphone jack to the amplifier. True, you then have to use two cables -- one for power and another for signal -- but that's simpler than adding an attenuator you don't really need.

For example Dock-to-USB-to-12V adapter cord or docking station to 12V car power source for power plus mini-to-mini or mini-to-RCA for attenuated signal to amplifier.

Scratch all that and put in an 8 track. And tell him to keep his eyes on the road.

My first car accident (no one was hurt, and no significant damage) was due to an 8-track. The match-book i kept underneath the cartridge to keep the head better aligned fell out, and i looked down to get it.

The rest of the story sort of writes itself...

I remember doing that. See, there should not be any distractions in the car!!
