intermittent wiring

Put two new pots in my friends Tele tonight, all the solder joints were neat, and solid with vey little bare wire left exposed, out of the guitar it worked perfectly, waggled all the wires with no noise, or problems at all, put the control plate back in the control cavity , and have an intermittent cut out, put insulating tape around the inside of the cavity, and it works, but the wiring was neat with no exposed wire to short out on the shielding paint........ any ideas ?

Thanks, both pots were brand new CTS 250 K's and worked perfectly; something was shorting out against the shielding paint, but with no exposed wiring to do this, I couldn't work out what the hell was causing the problem.

Without seeing it, it can be anything from a tiny ball of solder rolling around in a pot, a broken wire (while stripping), to a bad ground at the jack, or even your cable... You may even have pulled the cable from the pot to the jack and it's shorting out the jack as you move around.

I had a guitar with a shielded cavity that putting the back plate on pushed one of the connections on one of the pots against the shield at the bottom of the cavity. When i opened it up, no problems. Close it up, it caused a short.

Doesn't sound like that's the case here as it seems the shield on the backplate itself is causing your issue. So. see what is touching the plate. Or just leave it as is since it seem to work. But, check to make sure your ground is still good. Safety first. :)
