I want to hear about the results of your PVs modified by Teefus (Craig). I'm considering this amp for rock, blues and some metal. Please let me know what you guys think.

thanks,

Nick

I think teefus does a great job implementing the mods from Blue Guitar. I liked the clean channel very much. It appeared to like the pedals I threw at it. The gain channel has quite bit of distortion to it, so I put a 12ay7 driver in it to not slam the el84s so hard. Definitely worth the cash.

The mods take the brittleness out of the clean channel. After the mod the amp sounds very similar to a BF Deluxe Reverb and the more you turn it up the more it breaks up in a similar fashion. I don't use the OD channel or the boost channel. I find that using the clean channel with my Keeley TS-9 puts me in my Classic Rock/Blues tone zone. Since the amp is not a true channel switching amp it works out best for me this way. After the mods the amp is very pedal friendly. A Tech 21 Double Drive out front gives more of a Marshally OD where with the Keeley it is more Voxy.

I also swapped out the speaker and the tubes. I use JJ EL-84 power tubes, GT 12ax7M preamps, and a Weber alnico 30 watt Blue Dog.

Like I said, a classis rock and blues amp. Huge bang for the buck.

If you are looking to do metal forget it, look elsewhere.

I back up what has been said, I like mine alot. Maybe it's selective hearing on my part but I think it responded better to pedals now thn when stock. I used mine quite a bit and it shares duty with my Twin Reverb. Sometimes I run them together and that's a real kick, the strong mids of the 30 combined big lows and top of the Twin create a wall of sound

steve ahola (blue guitar) has done some great work and documentation on this subject. the mods on his web site are kind of tailored more towards blues and less towards rock though. if following his lead (pun intended) i would definitely make some changes to make a more usable rock n roll amp. he has schematics and layouts for a lot of other amps and many mods listed too. someone here (maybe gus?) has a modded c30 that he uses for old skool metal (iron maiden, iirc) and seems to like it. some gain can be added but as mentioned earlier, the c30 is not a true two channel amp so in doing so you lose a little headroom on the clean side. be wary of the "negative feedback loop removal" mod, i have hear dit and it sounds too ratty to my ears. i have also seen a new one. an amp on the bench right now has been modded (not by me) to turn the boost on only when the lead channel is footwithced. it worked o.k. i guess but was very messy. i ended up disabling after discussion with its owner because i think the clean channel really gains something from the modded mid-boost and it looked dangerous.
