FX send/return question

Question

I have two mixers. A four-channel with no built-in FX and a ten-channel with FX. I'm having to use both mixers because I now mic my drums and I ran out of inputs on the 10-channel. Currently I'm connecting the two mixers via the Main Out on the small mixer to an open channel on the big mixer. That part works fine. I want to send the FX of the big mixer to the small mixer. I connected the FX send on the big mixer to the FX return of the small mixer but that's not working for me. No matter what knobs I turn I'm not getting the effects on the small mixer. I need help! Please let me know if you need more specifics or photos. Thanks.

Have you tried fx send big mixer to fx return small mixer and fx send from small mixer to fx return big mixer? Seems you should still get fx on the big mixer on the particular channel you're small one is plugged into.

I tain't no expert, but I think the FX send/return on the 10ch mixer is for it to access external effects, not for other units to access the internal effects. I think you would only be able to apply the internal effects via the channel that you are connecting the smaller board into. So, only to the submix, and not channel by channel on the 4ch board.

Unless i'm mising what yer trying to do. I'm kinda dense that way... :)

On most mixers that I have used the FX Send/Return is after any internal effects built into the mixer so you will never be able to get effects on a dry signal coming in through that route. You'll probably need to run the output of the 4-channel into one or two inputs on the 10-channel to get effects on those signals.

Y'all are correct, as usual. I suspected the internal effects weren't meant to be sent out. I am able to add effects to the submix so that's good enough. Thanks for the replies!
