RichRS6 Posted January 24, 2014 Posted January 24, 2014 How easy is it to swap 2 conductor wiring to 4 conductor wiring on pickups ?Just bought a Lollar (thanks Clint) and want to try and split the coils with a push push pot. Soldering isn't a problem just want to find out if its an easy job or a pita, what the best wire is and where to get it.
velorush Posted January 24, 2014 Posted January 24, 2014 Ever solder hair? That's about the size of the 42 or 43 ga wire you're working with.I've always been chicken, but that doesn't mean you shouldn't try.Murkat can do it, however. ETA: found this to give you an idea of the work and this to help with the color coding.I hope you didn't find my post discouraging; that wasn't the intent. It's really simple but nearly nano-scale (to me, anyway) work that shouldn't be taken lightly.ETAA: you'll need some of this (though if you're going to do this often, there's quite a discount for 25 feet).
murkat Posted January 24, 2014 Posted January 24, 2014 it is not easy.I have done many though.Patients, low heat solder station, rosin lead solder, an ability to be methodical in "puzzles"...it is not an easy task. But, can be done.
Andrew Posted January 24, 2014 Posted January 24, 2014 It's only a case of soldering wires to the connecting wires of the two coils in the pickup, as well as re-doing the existing connections to four conductor wire plus shielding. Well within the capability of most. The main concern is dismantling the pickup, but mostly you only need to remove the outer tape. Re-soldering the earth/shield wire to the base plate can be a bit tricky as the plate will get hot.
RichRS6 Posted January 24, 2014 Author Posted January 24, 2014 Thanks once again for all the help and links.I was looking for braided 4 conductor as I think it'll offer better screening but no one seems to stock it.I'll have a go and report back.
murkat Posted January 24, 2014 Posted January 24, 2014 4 cond braid is a toughy to find, I have not found any myself.I use black wrap, and grey wrap, does very well, looks like stock to all the types out there.

RichRS6 Posted February 2, 2014 Author Posted February 2, 2014 All done, not too tricky. Thanks again for the pointers they really made it easy.
