BTMN Posted March 2, 2014 Posted March 2, 2014 I found a case I had a guitar in that has the foam beginning to degrade. Any links to redoing the foam or tips?Much thanks in advance for good information.
veatch Posted March 2, 2014 Posted March 2, 2014 The only tip i have is on how to cut the foam: that is by using an electric turkey carver. Works like a champ. Good luck. Curious on how this works out.
Bloozguy Posted March 2, 2014 Posted March 2, 2014 I took the case for my Hamer Miller High Life guitar to a luggage repair shop. They custom cut foam blocks, covered them with the black fur and glued them in place...all for around $30 or $40.
BTMN Posted March 2, 2014 Author Posted March 2, 2014 Ah Ha! Tampa /St. Pete = Ton of tourists needing luggage repair. Let me look into that.I am concerned with glue/guitar finish potential interaction.I have had that with a Hamer Cruisebass in a Peavey case that the foam degraded in long before I got it.Then I had hardware changes in a new Dean case for an ML. Metal I figure not much I can prevent really, cheap metal reacts. The case currently in question had a very modified refinished Vector in it. Nothing happened to the Vector but I had to be careful picking foam off the guitar.
Bloozguy Posted March 2, 2014 Posted March 2, 2014 When I had mine done I cautioned them about their choice of adhesive and any potential reaction with the finish. The guy just laughed and told me about their experience building flight cases for orchestral string instruments.
RichRS6 Posted March 3, 2014 Posted March 3, 2014 I have just had this done for an old flightcase I got with a standard that all the foam had disintegrated in.I had a company here in the U.K. called adrenaline cases do it for me.I considered doing it myself but after a chat with the guys there and some good advice from various forum members (thanks all) I made a tracing of the guitar including measuring some heights for neck rests and sent the case up to them to fit an insert. The results were first class, way better than I could ever have done myself. This may cost a little more than DIY (foam cost, glue, time and effort searching for the correct materials, loss of fingers with an electric turkey carver etc) but if a good company does it for you it will be worth the extra.Alternatively if its for a (standard guitar shape, L.P. Tele, Strat) find a case company give them the internal dimensions and ask how much for them to make the insert to fit the case and send it to you to fit.If you're lucky you might find a case company close to you so you can just drop it off and collect it.Try these guys..http://www.vikingcases.com/index.html
BTMN Posted March 4, 2014 Author Posted March 4, 2014 They wont repair this case. Only repair road style cases. I'm leaning towards replacement and doing something else with this case. Still looking for a luggage repair place though.
Bloozguy Posted March 4, 2014 Posted March 4, 2014 Gene,Snap a few pics of the inside and outside of the case and send them to me. I'll have my guy take a look at them and see what he recommends. I'll also ask him if he knows anyone in the Tampa/St. Pete area that could/would do it.R
BTMN Posted March 5, 2014 Author Posted March 5, 2014 Can't get to that until Monday if next week. No pressing issue. Thanks.
