Yamaha THR5 Effects Question

chromium

Question

Posted

I use this as a practice amp, and generally love it... but one thing I notice with mine is that the effects are never fully 'off'.  I'm talking specifically about the 'effects' knob that sweeps between chorus/flanger/phaser/trem.  When fully counter-clockwise, it sounds to me like the chorus is still running - but at the slowest possible speed.

Just curious - Is anyone aware of a way to completely disable the efx on these?

Hmm, I'm pretty sure they can be turned all the way off. Is your s running the V2 software? You can actually control the amp through software if you have it plugged into the computer, and you can set up the presets to be completely dry.

Thanks - I'll check into this.  Haven't tried any of the PC editing yet.

Mine is the v2.

I have the THR10 and I highly recommend the editor software .  Some of the presets are quite good (to my ears anyway).  There are several YouTube videos on setting it up and connecting that were helpful.

The number of presets you can download from yamaha is staggering. I haven't even gotten to look at half of them yet. You also can control the effects parameters more accurately through the software.

Hey thanks all for the suggestion!  Finally set the editor up tonight and spent some time with it.

You know what I think I was hearing is the "extended stereo" that can be disabled under preferences.  It was on by default, but with it off the amp spits out a nice little snarl, and less of the big swirling stereo/spatial thing - if that makes any sense.  Great with the Brit models.  At least now I know how to disable that...

Love it!  Thanks again.

The stereo imaging IS really nice, IMHO. The big thing about the V2 upgrades to the software was that they used a bunch more microphones when developing the models. Yamaha was also great in making the software available so that all V1 owners can upgrade to the V2 software.  I have the THR10, and it's a great little amp. I have it with me today, as I bring it to guitar lessons so I don't have to deal with their completely crappy practice amps that they keep in the rooms.

I just played with my THR today, and there definitely is some "free play" before you get into the areas where the effects work. I wish all my amps sounded as good as this thing does.
