Video cameras for live shows

Question

Posted

So I want to do some promo videos for my solo show, I have an older HD camera that shoots it MTS, I have had problems converting this to a "useable" format so I am thinking of getting a new camera for "work"

The gopro seem to be trying to be an "industry standard" but there are offerings from sony, and zoom that get good marks as well.

My question(s)

1. Can you take pictures out of the video stream, is the quality good enough to pull pictures from? nothing fancy, not to print pics from, just for website use.

2. Sound, I may do recordings from a soundboard and mix them with the video in Studio One, so it has to be a format that S1 can manipulate(MTS is NOT)

I am getting pretty excited about getting some more shows lined up, and hope to be able to put together a decent press pack and publicity materials together. It's a lot of work to get this play thing going ;)

GoPro mounted on your head - nobody wants to see you, they want to see themselves.

I wish I could be more help. It sounds like a cool thing you have going. You have to post the final product (or a link to your site).

If there you have the right software you can get a screen grab or a single frame from any video. I use QuickTime player seven on my mac. But there's many options to do this.

Do you have mac or pc?

I have a mac, I have Studio One Pro for audio stuff, I can use it to pull audio and sync it to video, just not MTS video, which is what my current camera shoots.

I am seeing a TON of Hero3's for sale here, but I'm having trouble getting info on the specs.

You can import MTS files into iMovie and then iMovie will convert them for you. You can also use handbrake to convert the MTS files to an MP4 file or some other format.

If you use iMovie you can find the frame that you want to copy and then make it freeze-frame of that frame. Then you can right click or control click on that new frame at the end of the movie and it will be a JPEG that you can control click and select reveal in finder to show it in the Finder.

Hold down Option and drag the file to your desktop to create a copy of it on your desktop.

Awesome, I'll play with it imovie some more. I would love not to have to buy anything right now :)

Learning how to use a mac has been a grumpy process, mostly because I have limited time to work on it and get stresses by the time it takes me to figure things out.

I'm getting it, slowly

I use a GoPro to record my band.  Absolutely love it.  I was expecting the sound

to be pretty lame given the onboard mic, but it sounds great.  A little pricey,

but it was a gift anyway.  Give one a try...
