Sunn Amps??? (NHC)

A buddy of mine has just scared up an older Sunn amp that all went back together OK, but the power transformer is toast.

It seemed to me that somebody here had God's Own Personal Sunn amp collection. I was hoping they may have a source for the power transformer specs for this model. It's a 350L.

Anybody? Bueller? Bueller?

sunn used dynaco trannies on some of their models. in the 80's tons of the amps were gutted by audiophiles for amps. in fact allesandro was buying dynaco amps and using the transformers for his amps.

Triode Electronics sells reproduction Dynaco iron, but only for the two-tube stuff. What your buddy has is the late version of the 1200S lead amp, which used the four-KT88 Dynaco set (I have the 2000S bass version of this rig).

I think Mercury offers a clone but it is EXPEN$IVE.

I'm told that the 350L is actually either a 1000S or 1500S, depending on whether or not it's got reverb/tremelo. The 350B was a relabeled 2000. Thanks for the tranny lead.

The big difference is that all the 350s had SS rectifiers, and most of the earlier rigs had dual 5AR4s (some had plug-in SS modules installed).

I stand corrected, the 350L is a rebadged 1200S with the SS rectifier, although, from what I gather, the traqnsition from tube to SS rectifiers happened during the 1200's lifetime.

Correct. My 2000S is a '70 model that had only one recto socket installed and a plug-in SS module residing therein.

I scrounged a period-correct Cinch snap-ring socket and set it up for the dual 5AR4s and I'm rarin'.

A bit more scrounging around and it appears that the 1000-2000 series all had the same power section, allowing for the change from KT-88's to 6550's. Given that, and given that the higher power models were simply a doubling-up of the Dyna output section, it's probably a safe bet that they used the same power transformer, changing to diodes later on for rectification, throughout the line.

I'll have my friend check the codes on his XFMR but it appears to be a readily available Hammond part.
