iPhone se for Verizon no SIM card. Options?

Hi.  My phone is dying so I bought a used mint iphone se off craigslist (so you know it's good lol).    Esn checked out with verizon as valid but no SIM card.    What are my options, do I need a SIM card?   I don't like being beholden to the man with crazy phone prices so I've always bought used phones.  Is the SIM card going to bite me here? Am told there's a workaround with iTunes but could use advice.  Thx

Update: Called verizon.   They are sending me a free SIM card so I guess I'm all set.     Wasn't expecting free.

SIM cards cost nearly nothing.  It's the monthly service charges that add up.  If the phone is unlocked, or you can have it unlocked, then you have choices.  Resellers like PureTalk, H2O, Net10, TracFone and on and on, offer either pre-paid or monthly packages (talk and text, or with data) of varying amounts for usually cheaper prices.  Unlock that phone and look around!
