straightblues Posted March 26, 2005 Posted March 26, 2005 This is my Easter present, hope you enjoy it.I have been using tube PA amps from the 50's and 60's for a year or so. I have 7 different ones ranging in size from 5 to 65 watts. I bring the right sized one to each gig so I can always have power tube distortion at any volume. I don't have any way to record right now, but I came across this site today of a guy with a Bogen CHA 33 (a 33 watt amp with 2 6L6 power tubes, and 2 12AX7 preamp tubes and a 5Y3 rectifier.) The sound clips sound just like my two Bogen CHA -33's when you plug straight in without any pedals. When I discovered these things I was totaly amazed by the sounds I was able to get. The best thing, is you can buy them already converted for guitar for between $75 and $150 on Ebay everyday.http://home.triad.rr.com/leftee/BoggyIV.htm
tomteriffic Posted March 26, 2005 Posted March 26, 2005 Wow, I'm not the only one who knew about this, huh? Haven't had one in decades but used to do that trick, using a Wollensak tape recorder's mike input to get the guitar's signal level up. Mine was a Challenger 50 with a pair of Gold Lion tubes in it, I remember.
m chops Posted March 26, 2005 Posted March 26, 2005 Seems to me the original guitar player for Chicago Transit Authority/Chicago (Terry Kath?) play through Bogens
kurtsstuff Posted March 26, 2005 Posted March 26, 2005 Back in the day I had an "AIMS" 4 channel PA head that I played through along with my "Big Muff PI" and it must have had like 8 6550 output tubes and damn it was loud!! At the time I did'nt realize or know what the "Big Muff PI" was in refference to but man that amp was sexy.....lol!!
Guest Mike Lee Posted March 26, 2005 Posted March 26, 2005 Those tones are SO early 70's in a good way!
