ok…I just took possession of a one year old Pug head.  It is a hand-wired Lil Dawg boutique clone of a Marshall 1974 18 watter Normal channel. This is the 6th Lil Dawg I have owned. Top notch build with top components. Hi and Lo inputs, 4-8-16 impedance selector, and 2 speaker outs.

I had and gigged one of these for a decade and regretted selling it back in 2015. This one is like new. Heyboer  xfrmrs, 2 el84s, 2 12ax7s, and a GZ34 rectifier. I don’t think it has been played hardly at all. I don’t even think the xfrmrs are even broken in. 1 volume, 1 tone and the truth. No dirt pedals needed with this fire-breather. But OMG this circuit loves a treble booster!!  Jim at Lil Dawg built the chassis and the first owner built a nice pine head shell which is very well done (quality joints in the corners) and painted it in heavy textured black truck bed liner for a durable surface that is just made for gigging. This amp has beautiful cleans low with single coils,  it it is not really made for that. It is made to be cranked and you ride the volume knob. I gigged my old one a zillion times with just a cable and rode the vol knob from rhythm to lead. It is a rocker that does the Marshall mid-60s plexi thing in spades. This circuit is called the mini-Bluesbreaker for a reason. It is the perfect rock and blues-rock amp. Humbucks start to break up around 3 and it just gets creamier and louder as you go up. It is a loud 18 watts. I used to get told to turn down at outdoor gigs with it unmic’d…I kid you not.

Oh yeah, the last owner installed a 3 position bright switch which works extremely well. The middle position takes the mod out of the circuit.

If it is so great, why am I selling? My Top Hat With it’s mid control does this sound too….almost as well. Close enough and I don’t have room for redundant amps. Everyone should try an 18 watt clone and a 5e3 at least once. Touch sensitive dynamics that respond very well.

Tip: for a bluesier tone, swap out the GZ34 for a 5y3. Yummy. I got a great deal on this and want to pass it on. Lil Dawg gets $800+ shipped just for the chassis and $1189+ shipping for a mini-head.
SOLD

A fantastic amp here. When it sells I’ll buy another Lil Dawg or another Top Hat.

Here’s a Pug clip that @JGaleposted on another thread: http://new.littledawgamps.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/07/pug_od_short.mp3

Marshall charges $3k for their combo….this head is better built, quiet, and an absolute beast.

What the heck..,$700 and I cover shipping….That is a savings of $50-75….amps have iron and are expensive to pack and ship.

Bump cause there is an entire website dedicated to this very amp circuit…18 watt.

This one is quieter than my old one but rocks every bit as hard.

Here is the Lil Dawg ad copy:

The British amps are also deserving of recognition for the role they played in shaping the sound of modern music as well. There were many amps to choose from in the ‘60s, but the Marshall brand seemed destined to make history early on. Usually we think of the full Marshall stack, with 50, 100, even 200 watt heads driving multiple 4×12 cabinets. With sound that could fill a stadium, the Marshall tone caused many guitarists to aspire to stardom.

It was after a request from another friend that I agreed it was time for Li’l Dawg to offer a British voiced amp. I know a lot of people still want the 100 watt heads but something along the lines of the 18 watt circuit seemed to be better suited for the needs of most of my customers. So I built my prototype using a bunch of scavenged parts, stuffed them into a tiny chassis just for the challenge, and was very pleased with the outcome of my labor. Being a Li’l Dawg Amp it had to have a pedigree name so I called it the Pug.

My being excited about it was one thing, but what would others think? So I took it down to a local blues jam, offered it up for everyone to try, and then sat in the back to hear how it sounded in the mix. About 4 measures into the first song the guitar player using the amp stopped everything and shouted, “My Goodness, something’s burning!” I was immediately concerned as it was a prototype after all, but the big smile on Greg’s face was a reassurance for me to just sit back and relax. A lot of people played the amp that night and I got lots of great feedback about it; enough that I knew the Pug was going to be added to my build list.

The Pug is an 18 watt circuit for the folks who like the Marshall sound. It’s a high gain single channel circuit with hi/lo inputs, 1 volume, and 1 tone control. Most folks buy the “TMB” style chassis (treble, mid, bass) but only use the normal channel anyway so the simpler circuit build makes a lot of sense.

I’m using a set of Heyboer 18 watt trannies and will be building the circuit in a 17″ x 6.5″ x 2.5″ chassis box that also fits the Blues Breaker style combos or the small box head. I do add an impedance selector switch as well as the parallel outputs.

Somebody's gonna score big here. Love my 18W head - perfect size, output and tone for clubs, rehearsals and recording. Add a 2x10 or 2x12 cab with your fave speakers and ROWYCO. I don't miss my '70 Marshall JMP small box one bit with the much more practical and versatile 18W. Get this!!!

GLWS Jakeboy.

I do have some old tubes around, I’ll have to get the tester out and see what I’ve got. What’s the tube assortment?

Posted

Rectifier can be GZ34, 5v4, or 5y3…from hard to soft. Tight rock to touch-responsive blues.

Power tubes are 2 el84s.

Preamps are 2 12ax7s.
