KeyOfZ Posted March 31, 2006 Posted March 31, 2006 I got one of these to replace the bridge that cam with the 1993 Daytona that I got off of Ebay (this is the one that had issues) I decided to try installing the bridge myself thinking it would be a piece of cake. The bridge screws that came with it were about 1/4 inch longer than the originals any they came through the other side in the trem cavity a bit. Rookie move I know. Then I stripped two of the screws as they were going in. The tremelo did fix my string alignment issue but I had to extract the two stripped screws and put two of the old screws to replace them. They aren't the same size so the tremelo won't stay in tune like it should. I went to the hardware store and got better screws so they will all be the same size. Hopefully that fixes my issues with tuning stability...BUT! To top it all off....the tremelo cavity cover now touches the tremelo block and springs when installed so now I have to use this one without the trem cover. Queue the Sanford and Son theme. This guitar is now officially a "player". I paid $525 for it, bought pickups and had the wiring fixed for another $200, paid $45 for the new bridge. *sigh* Hopefully it will play better than ever after I get it all worked out. On a positive note it seems tlo be WAY more resonant with this new bridge and because the string alignment is fixed I no longer have to "pitch" the neck to one side. I guess I should have talked to Dave at Valley Music or called Greg on this one....live and learn!
sw686blue Posted March 31, 2006 Posted March 31, 2006 Sorry to hear about that. When I replaced mine I used the original screws from the original tremelo. Why don't you remove all the new screws and put back the old ones?
KeyOfZ Posted March 31, 2006 Author Posted March 31, 2006 Sorry to hear about that. When I replaced mine I used the original screws from the original tremelo. Why don't you remove all the new screws and put back the old ones? The original screws were in really bad shape, 4 of them were stripped out and the new screws are thicker so the holes are now bigger. I should have put more forethought into this before slapping it in...my bad
Gabe Posted March 31, 2006 Posted March 31, 2006 It should be the right Wilkinson bridge, see the answer of BCRGreg to my question in the following thread: http://www.hamerfanclub.com/forums/index.p...wilkinson&st=15 IMHO BCRGreg is one of the most thrustworthy guys on this message board (, and I've never talked in person or on the phone to him nor have I ever done business with him, so it's just "gut feeling") Gabe
KeyOfZ Posted April 3, 2006 Author Posted April 3, 2006 Update: I replaced the old screw with the same size screw that came with the new Wilkinson bridge and the springs as well. Now it stays in tune with bar use. If I pull back on the bar however it will raise the pitch slightly and won't return to original pitch unless I do a quick dip with the bar. Any suggestions on this? I think I just need some lube on the pivot point of the six screws but I'm not sure what to use. Oil? Chapstick? Earwax? Suggestions appreciated. BTW - This Daytona has officially been "saved". It now plays and sounds awesome. This Daytona has a Louisville slugger type neck on it that makes rythms and chords extra chunky....it compliments my 94' Daytona (skinnier neck) nicely.
pesocaster Posted April 3, 2006 Posted April 3, 2006 make sure it's not getting caught up at the nut.... I use pencil graphite....
atquinn Posted April 3, 2006 Posted April 3, 2006 If trem screws going through to the other side of the cavity is a rookie move, then PRS has a bunch of rookies designing their guitars -Austin
Hamer95USA Posted April 3, 2006 Posted April 3, 2006 Hey KeyOfZ, I'm glad to hear that your upgraded bridge project turned out alright. We should have a northern California Hamer Jam for the summer. Guitar George
