HoboMan Posted May 12, 2025 Posted May 12, 2025 (edited) SOLD 1986 SG62. This was the first year of the reissues. From what I've read this is the guitar started the entire reissue line for Gibson. Angus Young endorsed and used these. It is not all original. If you're looking for a collector guitar this is not it. If you're looking for a KILLER player SG this is it. I got this I think around 2012. I was told it was a 1986 but I don't know for sure. The first digit in the serial number is an 8 and the fifth is a 6. The frets were so worn that they were almost level with the fretboard. I had it refretted with Stainless Steel Jumbo frets by Scott Bond at FatCat guitars in Elgin IL and he did an amazing job. He also replace the nut with (IIRC) a tusq nut. I used to use graphite (pencil lead) in the slots and the nut has turned brown over the years. Not sure if it's from the pencil lead or just age. The pickups had been replaced already so I put in a Duncan JB at the bridge and a Dimarzio 36th anniversary at the neck. One of the tone pots was crapping out so I replaced all the pots with a drop in pre-wired harness. Can't remember where I bought it but I recall it was top quality. Pretty sure the tuners are original. They all work great but one does turn easier than the others. The guitar stays in tune great. The bridge has been replaced with a tonepros locking bridge. The little locking screws are not there. When I first got the bridge installed and locked the tone suffered. I was getting ready to return the bridge but then I removed the locking screws and all the tone came back. I have the original bridge somewhere but I don't know where it's at since I recently moved and I have stuff packed in boxes along with the original pots. Lets just say I don't have them but if I find them after I sell the guitar I will gladly ship them at no charge to the buyer. It has what I believe are called "reflector knobs"? One of the tone "reflectors" is missing. Shaller strap lock buttons installed. Includes a non-original hardshell case. This is stamped "SEC" on the back of the headstock. For you old timers like me, you know this meant it had a factory flaw somewhere so stamped these guitars with either SEC, SECOND or the number 2 and sell them at a discounted price. The flaw was usually a very minor finish flaw, something that Gibson today would just sell as new. This is a 39 year old Gibson SG that has been gigged but never abused. It shows signs of being gigged with little dings and swirl marks. This are a couple of cracks in the finish near the input jack where I probably overtightened the nut when replacing the electronics or maybe that's why it was stamped as a SEC. If you're looking for a KILLER Older SG that plays and sounds amazing this might be what you're looking for. The jumbo SS frets as smooth as buttered glass. It has a brand new set of Ernie Ball 8s on it. The neck is straight it's setup with low action. The action can get very low without any fretting out. This is an amazing playing guitar. Weighs 6.52 lbs on my digital scale. I took pics tonight but the indoor lighting makes it look a little lighter than it really is. . It's a little darker so I'm including an older pic of it sitting on the back of my couch . It has a "vintage vibe & look" to it. The fretboard inlays have a lot more color to them than newer Gibsons. You can find one cheaper or in better condition but it probably won't have Jumbo Stainless Steel frets. $1900 shipped & PayPal'd. $1800 Local pick up in Madison WI area. No trades. Travis Posted May 18, 2025 Posted May 18, 2025 If Scott Bond did these frets then this thing will play like a monster. I’m tempted and I don’t even get along with the balance of SG’s. Maybe now is the time for me to try again… Somebody pick this up and make the decision for me… 1 Quote

Maybe now is the time for me to try again… Somebody pick this up and make the decision for me… Not only did Scott do the refret but when I complimented him on how great it came out he said (I'm paraphrasing), "working on guitar with a neck that nice sure makes it easy". Neck is straight as an arrow. I have it set with almost no relief but can easily be adjust to suit anyone's preference. Action can get VERY low without notes fretting out. Better price for in-person deals. 🙂 Edited May 18, 2025 by HoboMan Quote

He has done at least four regrets for me that I can remember. Guitar is currently on hold for a local buyer He came over and went back and forth between this SG and my Les Paul got us for over an hour. He finally decided on the Les Paul and was going to give me a deposit and after I wrote up the receipt he had changed his mind to the SG. Quote
