There have always been so many questionable statements from the EVH camp about his gear, etc )like Billy Gibbons) that I wouldn't believe everything that's in print on that guy.

Plus he's totally fried. But, it's not EVH who said it measures zero -- it's the guy at Fender who's building the replicas.

Every PU maker now makes sets that consist of a neck and bridge that are completely different! If the old way is considered the pinnacle of tone, why are we obsessed with this?

OK, talk amongst yourselves.

Sure they do. Look at the Dimarzio website under Vintage Output and they different list neck and bridge models for most their pu's. Although, not as many sets under the Shredder HO section.

Yeah... the lower output ones do... but then again... I bet they are wounded very differently... just that in such a way as to complement the tones well...

I have had extensive conversations about PAF pickups with my favorite winder. He's seen the 50's Gibson specs, and the ONLY requirement for magnet suppliers to Gibson was that they be made of magnetic material! Alnico 2,3,4,5 were all used interchangeably (and even an occaisionally ceramic). The thing is that sometimes, there was a magic set, and those are what became known as the "PAF" sound.
