Anyone ever ship to an APO address?

I got an email from a guy in Germany who is interested in a PRS I'm selling. He says his sister is married to a US soldier and wants it shipped to their APO address. His feedback checks out and at least so far, he seems sincere. I know nothing about shipping to an APO so headed over the USPS website and read up a little. I replied that I consider it but would need the name/complete address to properly calculate fees.

Anyone know about this stuff or have any advice? Of course, I can always just decline to ship outside the USA and move on. Thanks.

I don't know about the APO part but I just shipped an Impact bass to Germany on Friday through the USPS using Priority Mail International.

Germany will only allow $500 maximum insurance coverage, other than that it was no different than shipping to another state. I just went online and printed my shipping documents took it to the P.O. and paid.

It was really easy.

Hi,

APO means you will ship the package to a military depot, theres one in NY one one in SanFrancisco, may be others but there are the 2 I have shipped to in the past. You just have to pay to get it to one of the depots, Uncle Sam pays the rest to get it overseas.

i shipped 2 guitars to 2 different apo's this year. one neded up in germany and the other in england. it took a long time for the recipients to get the guitars and the tracking was non-existant. other than that it was pretty smooth.

Thanks. I don't know about the "no tracking" part -- makes me a little uncomfortable because someone could always claim they never got it. I'm going to wait for his reply to my email and go from there.

You could get a money order so the buyer cannot get funds back and have him agree that once you send it, it's his. If it doesn't show up, or shows up broken or whatever, it's his problem and not yours.

The US Post Office has buildings over there. He can go and get a US MO. You can also have him wire the funds to your account. Some people hesitate, but it is perfectly safe. Once the money is in your account, you are safe. With Paypal or any other type of MO, you open yourself up to charge backs and enormous hassle. With a US Postal MO or wire transfer, you eliminate almost all of your risks. That being said, he may walk because he will have no recourse if something does go wrong with the shipment.

At this point, I'll probably just stick to a US sale.

If he is willing to take on the risks, you have nothing to lose. At least give him the chance to decline. The guys over there who are serious about guitars realize this is part of the deal and will usually take on the risks. I have done more than a few deals over there, and most of them were fine, the ones that weren't came from inexperienced buyers who didn't understand what was required of them. I have yet to lose any money from an international transaction, but I refuse to accept anything other than the above mentioned payments now.

I've been on both ends of an APO shipment and had no problems. I would pack extra sturdy because impacts are the norm. You also lose all tracking and insurance coverage the minute it is delivered to the shipping depot.

For the record I would suggest EMS. It's faster and trackable. At ~$135 it's not a bad deal for guitars. Again, ship during a Catholic holiday and there is a good chance they won't charge your recipient VAT.

I sold it to him, so if any of you lied to me, I'm going to hunt you down like Tom Cruise in a Hitler movie.

(Thanks for the advice...)

If you took my advice for payment you have nothing to worry about, other than a deadbeat bidder of course. But that can happen with anyone. Now you need to save all of your shipping receipts until the transaction is over, which is something you would do anyway. There might be a bit more paperwork, but it is no big deal. Good luck bro, glad to see you playing again.

Somehow, the terror doesn't rise when I read that.
