The '59 Bridge in my Studio Custom Sounds Awesome Because...

You're right about the JB having lots of mids rather than true brightness. But they are upper mids that sound nasal clean, if played on an amp with lots of mids, and they sound very cutting with distortion.

Looking at HC reviews, it seems a lot of poeple (kids mostly) rate pickups based on the distortion sound. Bright pickups without a lot of mids (PAF style) lose cut and definition under heavy distortion. The JB never does no matter how much distortion you use.

Hey Mike, was it the Custom 5 (SH-14) you recommended for a Studio Custom for the bridge? This pickup sounds good to me. (See link. Seymour Duncan needs to stop future use of numbers and the word custom for pickup names I think.)

Yes, I have a Custom 5 in the bridge of my Studio Custom along with the stock '59 neck.

I don't see how SD can claim that the regular custom with a 14 Kohm wind abd a ceramic magnet sounds like a beefed up PAF. I tried one and it didn't sound anything like a PAF. The Custom 5 isn't really that PAF-ish either, but it sounds good nonetheless. PAF's in the bridge position sound too thin to my ear.

Good thread since I'm considering replacing my JB in my Studio. I'm adding the Custom Custom to my potential list. I really liked the pickups in the PRS Singlecut 245 if anyone knows what type those are or what would be a close match for them-I'm guessing very PAF'ish. The JB's too bright for me in this guitar-I want fat LP tones with a bark-not tooo dark, just not overly bright. Allmans, Mule, Zep, etc. Is the CC a good match? Are Studio's naturally bright guitars?

The PRS SC245 has #6 pickups installed. I'll be taking my #6 out of my Singlecut to replace it with something else. Let me know if you're interested.

Trade for a JB? <_< I'll do a little more research and I might be interested. Thanks.

You might also like a Rio BBQ.

If you want that Glenn Tipton "Eat Me Alive" rhythm guitar chug, which would be best?

That would be the highly rare Custom 666.

<_<

Hmmmm...I thought that was the one for Iron Maiden or Dio.

The PRS SC245 uses the new PRS SC245 pickups (a new model). PRS SC Trems use the #6s. You're right about the 245 pickups: they are pretty low output PAF type pickups. Duncan wise, you're probably looking at regular 59s. If you really want to nail it though, you can probably hunt down a pair of the 245 pickups or if you're willing to go boutique, try the WCR Crossroads.

Thanks for the info. A '59 might be worth a try or a Gibson '57 plus, BBQ, Alnico II pro, or Pearly Gates. The problem is, it's hard to distinguish between all these similar pickups from soundclips. The SC245 sounded great but I was playing through a Marshall Dsl which I don't own (maybe someday), but it was way better sounding than the SC250 and a few others I tried. Anyone have any preferences between these-I guess I should add the Burstbuckers and Seth Lovers too-the WCR's are way expensive-not looking to spend that much, although I'm sure they sound great.
