Willie G. Moseley Posted February 9, 2008 Posted February 9, 2008 Two pickups, short scale, two volume knobs/one tone (I think), three-point bridge. I'm at the point where I may revert to short scale primarily for performance due to comfort requirements as I get older. The way I play (w/ a pick near the neck), short scale can be tinkered with to sound almost like a full-scale, but don't expect me to do any thumb-pops/pull-offs. Last short-scale bass I used regularly for gigs was a Kramer Duke in the late '80s, and it was okay, but I would expect an SG bass to sound better.I always liked EB-3s and EB-0s when I was growing up (particularly since Jack Bruce played 'em) and am wondering about the feel, sound, and comfort of Gibson's new versions. Any input appreciated.
DavidE Posted February 9, 2008 Posted February 9, 2008 It was the Musicians Friend Stupid Deal of the day today or yesterday. Still is. Only $899.http://www.musiciansfriend.com/stupid
MCChris Posted February 9, 2008 Posted February 9, 2008 It was the Musicians Friend Stupid Deal of the day today or yesterday. Still is. Only $899.http://www.musiciansfriend.com/stupidI noticed that. Almost pulled the trigger myself. Looks like the price is still the same though:http://www.musiciansfriend.com/product/Gib...Bass?sku=512798The faded version is only $799:http://www.musiciansfriend.com/product/Gib...Bass?sku=513285Elderly Instruments always refers to those basses' neck pickup sound as the "low hovering cloud tone."
Brooks Posted February 9, 2008 Posted February 9, 2008 listen to the 1st 2 govt mule cds for the kickass picked eb-3/ampeg svt tone.
DavidE Posted February 9, 2008 Posted February 9, 2008 Nope, the supreme version that was $899 as the stupid deal of the day is back to $1499.
MCChris Posted February 9, 2008 Posted February 9, 2008 Nope, the supreme version that was $899 as the stupid deal of the day is back to $1499.Yeah, they switched it back. $899 was a great price. Another HFCer got one for $699 recently. Now that is an incredible price!Did you see the Fender Reverse Strats for $399 a couple days ago? That inspired me to bookmark the SDOTD, as if I need more stuff.
marcnorth Posted February 9, 2008 Posted February 9, 2008 I have a white reissue I got when they first came out with them and just picked up a Supreme earlier this week. The guy at Reno's Music here in Indy had some on ebay for $699 buy it now and I couldn't resist. I also picked up a Black one last year but I sent it back because it had a couple of finish flaws on it.I played EB3's back in the late 60's up until 85 or 86 when I came across a Blades Bass. Once I got the Blades I sold off everything I had except for a Stienberger.I think the reissue SG's are cool. They are not as muddy as the old ones and are very light weight. I love the short scale too. Very easy to play. And there's a lot of them out there right now so they are priced pretty good.I say go for it, If you like Gibson's you'll like them. I'm going to pick up a fireburst one as soon as a good deal comes up on one.
MCChris Posted February 9, 2008 Posted February 9, 2008 listen to the 1st 2 govt mule cds for the kickass picked eb-3/ampeg svt tone.First album sounds like an EB-0 (the ES335 lookin' one); the inner sleeve pic shows Woody playing one (or possibly the Epihpone equivalent). Live at the Roseland Ballroom sounds like an EB-3 to me; the tone has a bit more treble (and again, the back cover pic shows him playing one). Same with Dose; I'm guessing EB-3.Which reminds me, I gotta add Allen Woody to the Greatest Bassists (and resist buying a faded SG bass today LOL).
