harry65 Posted June 3, 2008 Posted June 3, 2008 hey guys, need 2 matched pairs for two amps, some of the prices for nos on ebay are just ludicrious, has anyone tried the mullard reissues???????????? thanks guys, rock on.................................
discountsounds Posted June 3, 2008 Posted June 3, 2008 I've been perfectly happy with JJ EL84s in my Kingsley Deluxe 30.

If you want to spend about $28.00 a pair get the Tube Amp Doctor EL-84's.For about the same price Email Sgt Overdrive aka Terry Kilgore and ask for NOS Saratovs. These are early 80's Russian military spec tubes. I bought a bunch of these since they gave my NOS Tesla's a run for their money for half the price. He usually has some real off NOS stuff for cheap. terry_kilgore2003@yahoo.com
MCChris Posted June 3, 2008 Posted June 3, 2008 I've been perfectly happy with JJ EL84s in my Kingsley Deluxe 30.Yeah, in a combo, I need something with near-zero microphonics. JJs are fitting the bill so far, whereas the NOS Teslas I spent a lot more for did not.
discountsounds Posted June 3, 2008 Posted June 3, 2008 I should have mentioned my Kingsley is a combo. No microphonic problems with the JJs.Not to derail, but is that common with older tubes like NOS Teslas?

luiss Posted June 3, 2008 Posted June 3, 2008 JJs are good enough,I had them in a 18w clone and worked.I replaced them by NOS Miniwatts I scored and got a great sound.
harry65 Posted June 3, 2008 Author Posted June 3, 2008 JJ's from Bob at Eurotube.... Can't miss....i've used their 12ax7's and were nice until i scored some nos 12at7's, i need max clean headroom..........
BadgerDave Posted June 3, 2008 Posted June 3, 2008 I tried a set of very pricey NOS EL84s in my Orange Tiny Terror - Telefunkens, IIRC. A set of Groove Tubes 10s actually sounds better in that amp. YMMV, but in my experience, new, quality EL84s are pretty much interchangable. I like the flexibility of choosing the "hardness" that you get with Groove Tubes so you can opt for headroom or early saturation depending on your application and preference. They seem to do a good job of filtering out the microphonic stuff, too.
harry65 Posted June 3, 2008 Author Posted June 3, 2008 thanks, i ordered the saratovs, figured i'd give some good old cold war ingenuity a try..............................
Brewmaster Posted June 3, 2008 Posted June 3, 2008 thanks, i ordered the saratovs, figured i'd give some good old cold war ingenuity a try.............................. You will be real surprised by these. While the JJ is a solid choice for new production tubes there are some real NOS jems out there that most folks never heard of for around the same price. I have yet to experience any issues with the NOS Teslas I have had in my first Marshall 18 watt clone for the past year+. It has been used in studio and small gigs by some locals with no issues. Be aware, that there are round plate Teslas floating around that are not the same. Mine are hex plates and I think the hex plates are mil spec so more rugged. They take higher current and more physical abuse. Speaking of rugged, the new production TAD ( Tube Amp Doctor) EL-84 is excellent. I don't know where they are made but the bottle is slightly larger.Harry...where in Florida are you?
harry65 Posted June 3, 2008 Author Posted June 3, 2008 west palm dude, playin up in vero this weekend..........................
slider313 Posted June 4, 2008 Posted June 4, 2008 hey guys, need 2 matched pairs for two amps, some of the prices for nos on ebay are just ludicrious, has anyone tried the mullard reissues???????????? thanks guys, rock on.................................I tried the Mullard reissues and didn't like them at all. They seem to be very compressed, lack note definition and seemed to have less output than the JJ's. I've also tried the Electro Harmonics El84's and SovTek EL84M's and like the JJ's for the new production stuff. I have not tried the TAD's but may pick up a set to A/B with the JJ's.
