Locking Nut, or Not

Ted

Question

Posted

Hello,

I have never owned a Floyded guitar, but my MIM Trem just can't handle the abuse I give it. This fact plus the possible sounds/"noises" I can elicit with a Floyd have had made this a need to get when I financially can do it.

The question from me today is why would you not get a locking nut with a Floyd?

The locking nut is mandatory to achieve stable tuning while dive bombing with a Floyd. I would never not use a locking nut with one.

A Floyd without the locking nut is like a condom with a hole in the tip.

If you want to get a Floyd without a locking nut, you should just get a regular 2-point trem (there are all sorts of great ones out there) with locking tuners, possibly backrouted for pull-up. A great example is the trem system on EBMM Pectrucci guitars. While deal with all the shitty Floyd aspects (hard to intonate, bulky, need tools to change strings), if you aren't going to use a locking nut. The only issue is, if you like to pull-up, there aren't all that many regular 2-point trems on production guitars that are backrouted (EBMM Pectrucci and Suhrs are the only manufacturers I can think of that routinely do it) whereas Floyds are almost always backrouted.
