Brooks Posted November 4, 2009 Posted November 4, 2009 live in charlotte nc tonight!!!!! HORNS UP FOR METAL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bHXYzxdAhOY
Scottcrud Posted November 4, 2009 Posted November 4, 2009 WAS going to see them on November 13th, but my band has a gig in Corpus Christi the next night, gotta leave Austin around 2pm not going to get back till Sunday afternoon. Wife will hassle me too much. Will be the first time I've missed them since the Leviathan CD...I am going to see Dweezil Zappa's Zappa plays Zappa the following Thursday. Real Stoked about that.
lord nelson Posted November 4, 2009 Posted November 4, 2009 I wish Mastodon would do a headliner worldtour so it's actually possible to get tickets. When they opened for Metallica in Oslo this summer 40000 $150 tickets were gone in two hours. Mastodon, Baroness and Kylesa on a worldwide club tour! Now please!
unfun75 Posted November 4, 2009 Posted November 4, 2009 Converge is on that bill, right? They are so sick. Would have gone if closer.
alantig Posted November 5, 2009 Posted November 5, 2009 Saw the show in Philly on Sunday. The mix for HOF was not great - I didn't hear the vocals at all. Converge's mix was better. Mastodon was great - full "Crack The Skye" album - but Dethklok was awesome. Worth driving across the state for!Alan
Brooks Posted November 5, 2009 Author Posted November 5, 2009 outstanding show! we missed converge & high on firedue to the 2 hour drive down to charlotte. this was my 1st time in this newer venue calledthe fillmore, a kickass room w/ a huge stage, festival styleflown PA & lights, classy looking chandiliers & red drapes (forsound treatment on all the walls). we walked in and got a beerjust in time for mastodon. they played most if not all of the new cd"crack the skye", with killer visuals shown behind them on the enormous screen. their new stuff is more prog and yet more accessible at the same time.they were fairly stoic and still, concentrating on the riffs and multiple vocal parts of the new album. at the end of their set they did 4 or 5 old tunes, where they seemed to become more animated onstage, headbanging and moving around. my only complaint is that they didn't do "blood & thunder".brent played his killer see thru travis bean V, as well asles pauls and custom 1st act 12 and 9 sting guitars, while bill played hissilverburst les pauls and explorers. the sound and performance was flawless.next up was dethklok. obviously they had the cartoon images from the tv showup the whole time on the giant screen, with hillarious short pieces inbetween some tunes. the allstar band was gene 'the atomic clock' hoagland (strapping young lad)on drums, mike kenally (zappa/vai) on 2nd guitar, and steve vai's touring bassist(name escapes me). the real surprise for me was the shows creator brendan small, who did most of the shredding *while* doing all the vocals, very impressive player (i expected kenally to do most of the heavy lifting, but he only did about 3 solos, concentrating on rhythm and amazingly tight harmonized arpeggios). like mastodon, dethklok was *sick* tight, and also fairly stoic and still onstage, concentrating on the tricky riffs, although kenally and the bassist were a little more animated.kenally played a jackson, charvel strat style, and a few others thru a rivera and marshall.brendon played a black explorer all night, i couldn't see his rig. at the end of the show brendan finnaly addressed the audience directly(instead of the cartoon onscreen doing the talking), he used the varoius character voices from the show as well as his own(sounds corny, but it was funny). again, the sound was perfect, full and clear but not stupid loud.my only complaint is that they didn't do "the cyborg slayers"; i just got their new album,it's the tune that made it onto my ipod, my highest personal endorsement. funny how the humourous cartoon angle could get me into seeing anextreme modern metal styled band like this, as i'm an old school zep/sabs/lizzy kinda guy.even if you don't think you'd like a show this heavy, i'd recommend seeing this tour,as you may not get a chance to see two extremely talented acts together like this again(i'd liken this to seeing justice era metallica and rush on the same bill, only with more chops). highly recommended!!
Ethan Posted November 5, 2009 Posted November 5, 2009 That's probably the nicest venue down here now. Glad the show was good, too bad you missed Converge.Baroness is awesome!
alantig Posted November 6, 2009 Posted November 6, 2009 Brooks - Keneally is using the Jackson and Charvel, and the Rivera rig. The Marshalls are Small's.The bass player is Brian Beller - he's toured with Vai, Keneally (extensively) and was in Z w/Keneally and Dweezil Zappa.Alan
