MrGuitarguy Posted July 30, 2005 Posted July 30, 2005 I put a .001 capacitor on my strat's volume knob to reatain some highs since I'm a heavy volume knob player. It made them stay, unfortunately it made them stay so much that at low volumes it's pretty brittle. I've seen some people recommend a 300k ohm, 1/4 watt resistor in conjunction with the .001 capacitor. Would this make the highs roll back a bit more normally? I've never done this mod before as I've never needed it with another guitar, but this strat sucks the highs out so quickly that rolling the knob back before sounded extrmely muddy. Also I did try other volume knobs, but with no luck.thanks!
tgoss Posted July 30, 2005 Posted July 30, 2005 Yes, I think the resistor does help "smooth out" the pot.Wait, did that sound right?
Hamer95USA Posted July 30, 2005 Posted July 30, 2005 Hey Mr.Guitarguy, I got this link from The All Things Guitar website: http://www.allthingsguitar.com/2004reviews...tmod/potmod.htm Guitar George
mirageman Posted July 31, 2005 Posted July 31, 2005 My 1994 Hamer Mirage has this idea fitted to the vol pot,the Resistor is 150 kohm and the Cap is 0.001 micro farad ,this works well although the vol pot is 500k where as a Strat one is 250k.
MrGuitarguy Posted July 31, 2005 Author Posted July 31, 2005 The strat I have has vintage noiseless pickups in the neck and middle and JB Jr. in the bridge. Because of the noiseless pickups the pots are 1 meg. each, though I did try a couple of other values with no luck. I tried a .001 cap, but it sounds like that value is too high. I am going to experiment with resistor values to get correct taper. I think this has something to do with the vintage noiseless pickups as they have a bizzare wiring setup, much different from even "hot" noiseless pickups. The vintage have different pots, resistors, etc. When i find something that works I'll post it for anyone who might find it useful.
BCR Greg Posted July 31, 2005 Posted July 31, 2005 Ditch the Vintage Toneless pickups and use a pot that works for the pickup that you DO use.
