Turdus Posted June 29, 2010 Posted June 29, 2010 Has anybody ever used a chrome paint for touch up work?Any tips for prep work required, or application? This will be for a metal drum hoop that has some bad flaking in spots.
Stike Posted June 29, 2010 Posted June 29, 2010 Probably more than you want to spend but this is the only stuff IMO that looks real. Anything from AutoZone, etc. is shit.http://www.alsacorp.com/products/killercan...illerchrome.htm
DaveH Posted June 29, 2010 Posted June 29, 2010 I've used it before, and it helps to make a small area blem more unnoticeable. It's not chrome though, obviously. The best thing I've found for prepping metal for paint is lacquer thinner. There won't be a bit of grease or oil on anything you clean with this stuff, including your skin, so wear some nitrile gloves or something.
JohnnyB Posted June 30, 2010 Posted June 30, 2010 You might find it much easier to get a replacement here. They aren't terribly expensive. Five years ago (from another vendor) I managed to get high quality replacement parts to restore some Slingerland Radio King drums--sticksaver hops, beavertail lugs, and tension rods.
Turdus Posted June 30, 2010 Author Posted June 30, 2010 Thank Yee all for the suggestions.JB -- doubtful I'll ever find a replacement hoop for this kick drum. You ever heard of Zickos?
JohnnyB Posted July 2, 2010 Posted July 2, 2010 Thank Yee all for the suggestions.JB -- doubtful I'll ever find a replacement hoop for this kick drum. You ever heard of Zickos?Yep. In fact they're back in business. Zickos is the original acrylic shell drummaker. Zickos patented the use of Plexiglas-shelled drums. All the copycats relied on the fact that Zickos didn't have the resources to sue and enforce their patent. What's the diameter of the hoop, and how is it different from other metal bass drum hoops? Looks like you could order a replacement hoop now.
Turdus Posted July 2, 2010 Author Posted July 2, 2010 JB,This set is from the original Zickos run.... late 60's to early 70's. The hoops are slotted. The lugs connect a tension rod to a retainer, which then fits the slot. It's a very unique design. I found the kit locally, and it even came with the snare.... which seems to be extremely rare. I've been working on the set, as it needed some TLC.I will snap some pics at some point, purely for amusement if nothing else.BTW... even though you found the Zickos web site, I read somewhere that they folded up shop again... perhaps in 2009. I've sent an email that has never been responded to, so perhaps it's true.

Are you up for a trip to Tulsa? Also, you might check with these guys.
