Pre amp tube swapping in a hybrid

backinit

Question

I have recently acquired a Vox Cambridge 30 reverb as a lightweight bedroom/small jam amp. Although quite usable as is, the gain channel is way overkill as is. It has a 12AX7 in the preamp in a typical hybrid amp config. Might I notice a difference going to a different tube even though I'm using a hybrid?

I don't know exactly how the preamp functions but if you want less gain you can try a 5751 instead of the 12ax7. A 5751 has about 70% of the gain as a 12ax7, but it might not be enough to push the power amp, you would haver to try it.

12aU7, 12aY7. NOS preamps tubes in those nomenclatures do not cost as much as an "X", Jan, G.E., phillips, al good, good headroom as well. Nice amp you have there, wish I still had mine.

Thanks J. I'm enjoying it. I have been after one of these for about 6 years after seeing one on CL that got away.

I have a 12aT7 in it right now. To get some gain out of it you got to get it up around 2:00 with some good overdrive full on. Not sure if it will stay with that tube. It is a different amp.

Unlike some, I seriously *dislike* the AT7 in positions where an AX7 is called for. It does have less gain, but they are just not good sounding tubes IMHO. As mentioned earlier, the AY7 and AU7 might have a little less gain than you are looking for but in the end they will *sound* a whole helluva lot better. The AY7 is a favorite of mine.
