Compressor Questions

An ehx White Finger compressor made it to my house this week. The allure of endless sustain like an old MXR Dyna Comp or those neat sounding country licks was the inspiration for trying out the White Finger.

All that has happened is an increase in noise from sloppy picking technique. I have also managed to "punch holes" in the sound like I did with my recording equipment. That has come from setting the compressor to its most extreme settings while getting a feel for what each knob and switch does. Learning how to back off of the extreme is where some advice would come in handy.

So, please offer suggestions on how to get the most from a compressor.

Best compressor advice I ever got was to turn it up to where you can just hear it working, then back it off a tad.

compressor's need to be felt , not heard if that makes sense , subtlety is the key.............

This.

You'll hear a lot of Dynacomps, Ross, Keeley's etc. in country, and a lot of those guys use 'em with the sensitivity way up. But those guys have the proverbial flawless technique and can get away with it.
