Jimbilly Posted September 7, 2005 Posted September 7, 2005 Who likes em?, why? What amp do you use it with? I just bought one yesterday, any guitars they work better with than others?
Guest teefus2 Posted September 7, 2005 Posted September 7, 2005 i used one more as a booster for a while with my newport pros and artists korina (hb). it was well made and worked well for this purpose. i sent it back to voodoo labs and they modded it (resistor change) for a slightly darker sound. mine always seemed bright (even with hb's and hollow guitars). it was better post mod but still was pretty low gain. i ended up getting a barber burn unit eq and this works perfectly.
kenjones Posted September 7, 2005 Posted September 7, 2005 I use mine as an overdrive. I use a diiferent pedal for a boost. I don't use the Sparkledrive for extreme overdrive - just something a little bit more "hairy" than my normal tone. I set the blend control at about 12 o'clock. I use the volume knob on the guitar more than anything else to go from clean to distorted. For amps, I use a JCM800 2203 half stack at the rehearsal room, and use a '75 SFDR for gigs. It works well with both amps.

I saw Will Ray in a clinic a little over a year ago and he made specific mention of the Sparkle Drive on his pedal board. He uses it pretty much just as you described -- as he put it, "to add a little grit" to the sound without changing the nature or dynamics of the clean tone. When I was at the clinic I took a picture of his pedal board, and and here it is with his settings:
shankyboy Posted September 7, 2005 Posted September 7, 2005 Well, at least Will Ray has 1 quality pedal in his line-up. I have a Sparkle Drive and have really enjoyed it. It is definitely not a heavy overdrive. I prefer it because of the clean drive & sustain I get from it. The clean blend pot is genius except that I wish it also had a on/off switch for the clean blend feature.

I remember him saying something like he doesn't really know what the Sparkle Drive does, but he likes it. I think he always has it on or was it the compressor that he always has on. He also uses the Vibrato and Pitch Shifter pedals for leslie emulation which I thought sounded pretty good. One of the coolest sounds I got from the sparkle drive was when I had the compressor on. I think I had the clean/distortion mix at 50% and you would hear the compressed clean sound and the distorted sound. -FunkyE9th
