Wow. A writer friend recently turned me on to this guy and I read "A supposedly Fun Thing I'll Never Do Again" and was blown away. I did not know that the guy auto'd himself. Ugh, I found that so painful. Then I you-tubed his interviews.... man, so sad. What a cool guy. Check out the "Charlie Rose" series of interviews, if you are interested. Clearly, an uncomfortable dude, but still. So much talent.

I loved that book. I agree about the Charlie Rose interviews. His habit of adding footnotes so as not to clutter the flow of the original piece but also to give scope to his thoughts on related matter is both considerate to the gentle reader...and shows the depth of any topic and the artist's struggle to select.

I haven't read his giant novel Infinite Jest yet...

If you liked his take on the cruise industry in A Supposedly Fun Thing, you will also enjoy his reporting on his trip to the x-rated AVN awards in his book Consider the Lobster, which has some other hilarious and interesting essays and articles too.
