Hamer Time Posted June 1, 2011 Posted June 1, 2011 I was wondering if anyone knows what Dimarzio pickups came on the 94 Daytona?Obvioulsy SC, white covers, staggered poles. They say Dimarzio inside the covers but no model name or #.Thanx.
anotherfreak Posted June 1, 2011 Posted June 1, 2011 they could be aftermarket covers, most Daytonas came with Duncan SSL1's
zenmindbeginner Posted June 1, 2011 Posted June 1, 2011 Hamer ended their relationship with DiMarzio sometime in the late eighties. Hamer's relationship with DiMarzio was always sort of distant with Hamer getting specially made pickups from DiMarzio and never putting stock DiMarzios in their guitars. Seymour didn't get that kind of treatment from Hamer and was putting stock pickups in every Hamer made since then. The Phat Cat is an example of an above the board collaboration between Hamer and Seymour Duncan sort of like the Slammer series with DiMarzio. The difference in that the Phat Cats are for sale to the general public and the Slammers weren't.They are most likely SDS-1s although if they are high output, then they might be of the HS variety.
Hamer Time Posted June 2, 2011 Author Posted June 2, 2011 Thanx for the info. I'm not sure if they're high output, or not, I replaced them before I played it with a set of Bill Lawrence PU's. I though they were the original PU's but I guess not. That means I can sell them though, if they were the original I would keep them with the guitar. I just need to figure out what they are. Not sure if pics will help but....
zenmindbeginner Posted June 2, 2011 Posted June 2, 2011 They are SDS-1s. The Duncan SSLs from that time period had "IR" on a wax label and the HS series are stacked coils.
Hamer Time Posted June 2, 2011 Author Posted June 2, 2011 OK thanx, appreciate the help. Were SDS-1's made for all 3 positions, I can only find them for bridge position online? The one in the pic is in neck pos, and all three have dif pole heights. What are they worth?
atquinn Posted June 2, 2011 Posted June 2, 2011 SDS1's are $55 new, so used ones won't be worth much.-Austin
zenmindbeginner Posted June 2, 2011 Posted June 2, 2011 Well, you could have a combination of SDS-1 and FS-1 pups... they are true single coils and you could get RWRP middle versions of them back in 1994.But... anotherfreak had a point about us not really knowing what brand they are. If you can get some DC resistances off of them, that would put us on much more solid footing as far as pinpointing the exact brand and model of these mysterious pups with DZ covers.Plus... the wax "IR" labels could have fallen off and that would leave them with no means of identification.SDS-1 and FS-1 pups are hotter than the SSL-1s. SSL-1s sometimes come in a set with a SSL-5 in the bridge. SSL-3 pups have the flat poles... the SSLs, SDS-1 and FS-1 pups are staggered. The SSL pups never got much higher than 7k and have an authentic and quintessential strat tone. The SDS-1 and FS-1 trade some sparkle and chime for grit and output. They're pretty different sounding pickups. Let's get some DC resistances and go from there.
Hamer Time Posted June 2, 2011 Author Posted June 2, 2011 Hey thanx, I have to pick up a new meter on Friday, the one I have seems to be not working. I will check and report back.
AdmiralB Posted June 2, 2011 Posted June 2, 2011 Those are definitely NOT SDS-1s. SDS-1s have bottom-mounted bar magnets (a la P90s) and set-screw pole pieces.I'm 90% certain those are Fender American Strat pickups. The plastic bobbins with the square holes are, AFAIK, unique to them.
carfish7 Posted June 2, 2011 Posted June 2, 2011 Give us a shot of the whole electronics setup - it may be that the entire assembly was swapped.
Hamer Time Posted June 2, 2011 Author Posted June 2, 2011 I am pretty sure they were all replaced, they all have DM covers. The mid and neck are the same, square holes, the bridge is different.
