django49 Posted September 28, 2011 Posted September 28, 2011 Just took delivery of an Artist Ultimate this afternoon, after wanting to find one for several years. Thanks to David E for letting it go!I am interested in any comments people have from their own experience with the pickups and sound. It sounds very little like my old Artist Custom (with the Seth Lovers). Not at all bad, just different. Seems brighter, almost like single coils. Also, very powerful output. Of course, besides the "Ultimate pickups", the Ultimate has the ebony board and "Monster Wire" (to the extent that makes a difference). It may be my imagination, but I THINK the top is also slightly thinner. I would say there are SOME similarities with the Custom (HB) pickups on the Monaco Elite, as well as the Double Ds on the Talladega and the Phat Cats on the Newport. Yet still different than any of them. In a slightly different vein, does anyone have opinions on adjusting pickups? More specifically, my (old) Artist has the poles raised slightly in an arc more or less matching that of the fingerboard/frets. Which would tend to give a little more accent to the middle strings, at least relative to the outside strings. The Ultimate pickups are pretty much flat. I fully intend to get used to the way it came setup before messing with it. However, opinions are welcome.I have already learned a LOT on this site (as well as finding the guitar I have long wanted). THANKS!Someday, I should run down a Standard.......Someday.
ArnieZ Posted September 28, 2011 Posted September 28, 2011 The Ultimate pick ups defnitely have a single coil like clarity, but sound like buckers as you add gain. They are potted, unlike the Seths, and that has an impact as well. I really haven't tried to adjust them, a combination of laziness and satisfaction. Enjoy you new guitar!!ArnieZ
burningyen Posted September 28, 2011 Posted September 28, 2011 At some point after the mid-'90s Hamer started carving the underside of all the Artist tops so that the thickness over the sound chamber was maybe half of what it used to be.Congrats on the Ultimate acquisition!
