Color of my pups: taste-related question, but also looking for pictures...

Hello there guys,

I want a pair of HB-sized P-90's. The guitar which would have them is a Czech-made Dean V, all korina, finished in transparent red with gold hardware. The pickup mounting rings are both cream. One pickup is an all black HB, and the other is the original zebra HB (cream & black).

My question is: would all-black HB-sized P-90's look better on those cream mounting rings? Or... do you think it would be better getting black mounting rings and putting cream HB-sized P-90's on them?

I know this is about personal taste, but I'm having a hard time making a decision. Do you have any suggestion, or maybe pictures, to help me choose the color?

Thanks a lot in advance -and yes, I do realize how stupid my question is. :-S

Cheers & TIA!

Deans are tricky, some combos look awesome, some not

si much... here's a shot of my ML USA spalt, not exactly the same

but not far from the shade of a korina. double black...(mustaines

since replaced). I know you want p-90's but if it were my axe

I would maybe go with black lawrence (the bill and becky ones) or

creme rings with a pair of zebra dimarzio sd's (cheap if you use

a coupon at GC.com)

Wasn't considering gold pups, as there are fewer options out there, but they don't look bad with black rings:

...and with cream rings it doesn't look too bad either:

i like white rings with golden covers...pimping!

Of course you'll need golden buttons as well.

golden covers with black rings looks more macho...if your guitar does not have flame maple, maybe this second option is better

Hey Z,

owning a Czech-made dean sometime ago, The pup rings are of a different size, and the routing cavities are a little oversize as well, at least it was on the caddie. You might stuck with the creme rings, not a bad thing.

Gold cover phats, or creme SD new fangled pup that does it all, P90 and more... ?

Ok, thank you guys. I'll go with creme rings then.

As of the golden covers go, GFS (Mean 90's and Dream 90's) and Kent Arsmtrong do offer golden covers, but I'm not sure I want to go the import way.

Another alternative would be the Tonerider Rebel 90s, which are high-quality imports, but they offer just nickel covers.

There's then the SD Phat Cats, but I've heard contradictory reviews about them. Other brand is Bare Knuckles, offering the Mississippi Queen, but those are overpriced IMHO -no matter how good they might be.

What's left then? The Harmonic Design Z-90's (which don't do golden covers) and Manlius (whose Goat-whatever-it-was-named I don't find anymore). :(

Did some research and found out about a couple of extra models: the Brierley B-90 and the BG Pure 90

No golden covers offered though.

Also wrote to Mick (Manlius), whose humbuckers are awesome, just to see if the Fat Goats are actually discontinued. Still waiting for his reply.

Just FYI, got a reply from Mick. He has had some trouble getting supplies to build Fat Goats, but maybe they'll be back in January. If I don't find anything before, I might go with the Fat Goats, with cream tops, golden casing and gold pole screws:
