zorrow Posted January 3, 2012 Posted January 3, 2012 YouTube-ing for Michael Schenker I found this: That Ray Kennedy guy looks quite weird, but I think he fits perfectly to the sound of the band --ok, he's pitchy on the first one, but his voice has a lot of potential, don't you think? So, as the videos above look professionnally filmed, I wonder if there's a way to get the whole show on DVD. Do you have it, Schenker fans here? If you do, I want it, please!
zorrow Posted January 3, 2012 Author Posted January 3, 2012 Found another one:http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6BL3BCJ82NoThis has to exist somewhere!
hikarateboy Posted January 3, 2012 Posted January 3, 2012 Not sure but I think I found him when I took my son to his first real show (avenged sevenfold) last month. The link shows the likeness but the kid brought it although very pitchy when he wasnt in death metal scream. Heck what do you expect when pulled from the audience to front the headliner at like 17?
Turdus Posted January 3, 2012 Posted January 3, 2012 Only MSG I really care about is with Gary Barden. That said, the singer in MSG vids above reminds me of Thor:http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=982DrNtCGek
zorrow Posted January 3, 2012 Author Posted January 3, 2012 Funny enough, I'm not a big fan of Gary Barden. I actually like Graham Bonnet much more --a shame he didn't lasted!I guess that's why I also liked a lot the raspy touches of Michael Voss' voice in the last album. It sounds to me more appropriated to MSG than Barden.BTW, Robin McAuley is another singer I like better than Barden, as well as Jari Tiura from "Tales of Rock'n'Roll" --I find his "Dickinson-isms" perfect for MSG.In short, Gary Barden is certainly good, but to me he has always lacked that "metal edge" others do have. He'll remain THE MSG singer though, thanks to the classic albums whose sound he helped to shape.
Turdus Posted January 3, 2012 Posted January 3, 2012 Seems to me that people prefer a band lineup, that was active, when they first learned of that band. I bought the first MSG record when it came out. Thought the next one was actually better. Hated Assault Attack, and never listened to anything MSG did past that. But you see... in my opinion, the best Rainbow records are with DIO, because that is when I first heard the band. Hated the Bonnet and Joe Lynn Turner stuff. I'm just a crotchety old rocker.Actually, I lied... I did listen to the MS/Barden reunion album from a few years ago.
elduave Posted January 3, 2012 Posted January 3, 2012 That Cozy Powell/Chris Glenn rhythm section sound on the live stuff was delightfully soupy!
Turdus Posted January 3, 2012 Posted January 3, 2012 The drummer in the first 2 clips looks like Ted McKenna to me. Wasn't he the drummer on Assault Attack? I know he was Rory Gallagher's longtime drummer.BTW... My Favorite 2 Rory G. albums are Photo Finish and Top Priority. These are not early albums for him.. but this is when I found out about him. Most true fans would probably think those 2 records suck, as they are more hard rock than blues.
zorrow Posted January 3, 2012 Author Posted January 3, 2012 Seems to me that people prefer a band lineup, that was active, when they first learned of that band.I think you nailed it. My first MSG album was indeed "Assault Attack". Then I went backwards through their catalog before going from "Assault Attack" on. Thus, Graham Bonnet became my reference.
Hamerhack Posted January 3, 2012 Posted January 3, 2012 Only MSG I really care about is with Gary Barden. That said, the singer in MSG vids above reminds me of Thor:http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=982DrNtCGekI can't believe it!I remember that guy John Thor! My parents watched Merv every night!
elduave Posted January 4, 2012 Posted January 4, 2012 The drummer in the first 2 clips looks like Ted McKenna to me. Wasn't he the drummer on Assault Attack? I know he was Rory Gallagher's longtime drummer.I wasn't commenting on those clips, per se, but on my memories of the One Night At Budokan LP. Noted, though!
Turdus Posted January 4, 2012 Posted January 4, 2012 I can't believe it! I remember that guy John Thor! My parents watched Merv every night! I'm not 100% sure, but I believe this is the same "Thor". Corny, but a wonderful slab of 70's hard rock! Look at those Hiwatt amps!
Hamerhack Posted January 4, 2012 Posted January 4, 2012 I can't believe it! I remember that guy John Thor! My parents watched Merv every night! I'm not 100% sure, but I believe this is the same "Thor". Corny, but a wonderful slab of 70's hard rock! Look at those Hiwatt amps! Could be! My brother and I saw the Merv "Action" Thor performance way back when, and of course tried to explode our "5 Year Guarantee" water bottle immediately after the show! (Not even close...). Thanks for posting that clip! I showed my kids, and I gotta show it to my brother.
zorrow Posted January 4, 2012 Author Posted January 4, 2012 This is going too OT for my tastes. I'll be more explicit then: Does anyone here have the whole show on DVD? Would you please give me/sell me a copy of it? It looks it was at the Seibu Stadium in Tokyo, Japan, 1984. TIA!
zorrow Posted January 4, 2012 Author Posted January 4, 2012 Wasnt he in KGB in the mid 70's ? I was in the KGB -not him.
Hamer_SS_guy Posted January 5, 2012 Posted January 5, 2012 Yes, he is THAT KGB guy, that band with Carmine Appice, Rick Grech and Barry Goldberg. I think he did write one song on the Beck, Bogert and Appice album as well. I love Cozy Powell, but Ted McKenna is also a great drummer. Listen to the stuff he played with the Sensational Alex Harvey Band and with Greg Lake.
zorrow Posted January 6, 2012 Author Posted January 6, 2012 Oh! That KGB! BTW, finally found it here: http://www.rockonvidtrade.co.nz/ProductDetails.php?NID=283 PS: I know it's a bootleg, but I decided to pay for it because I cannot find it elsewhere.
zorrow Posted January 15, 2012 Author Posted January 15, 2012 BTW, finally found it here: http://www.rockonvid...ils.php?NID=283PS: I know it's a bootleg, but I decided to pay for it because I cannot find it elsewhere.A follow up here:Received it! The package is crappy, but the material is as good as it promised to be. It's professionally filmed, and Michael Schenker is really on fire. In fact, this is one of the best live performances from him I've ever seen. As of the singer goes, well... definitively odd, but still decent enough to make the whole thing enjoyable.
lincsman Posted January 15, 2012 Posted January 15, 2012 Excellent im glad you found a copy, will buy a copy for myself
