GuitarDoyle Posted September 28, 2005 Posted September 28, 2005 Any of you familiar with Voodoo pickups and how they compare to Fralins, Duncans, Rios....etc? I don't hear much talk about them but they seem like a nice hand wound pickup....gd
serial Posted September 28, 2005 Posted September 28, 2005 They are very good pickups. BCRGreg has a hotter wind that he uses that some other HFCers have that is one of the best sounding pickups I've ever heard. I have a set in my '03 mahogany Vector that I will likely replace, but that's because the guitar tends to be a bit bright and I'm looking for something darker. I'll put them in something-I really liked the pickups before they went into the Vee, so they just need to be in a guitar that they'll work with and they'll never leave.
GuitarDoyle Posted September 28, 2005 Author Posted September 28, 2005 Thanks Serial! I have heard the Greg wind is a bit brighter than say the BBQ...which to me is actually fairly transparent. Maybe the Greg Voodoo works well in darker guitars and the BBQ in brighter guitars.
serial Posted September 28, 2005 Posted September 28, 2005 I am actually going to drop a BBQ/GenTX Rio combo in the Vector-should make it perfect. The Voodoos sound great in mahogany guitars which was my thought originally, but there must be something about this particular piece of mahogany or maybe the shape has something to do with it.
thecajunboy Posted September 28, 2005 Posted September 28, 2005 My Studio Custom was originally fitted with the Greg wind VooDoo set. That guitar has a Sustain Block and ebony board. It ended up being too bright for my tastes. I replaced the set with Rios, BBQ/Texas combination and I'm a happy camper. Just for fun, I dropped the VooDoo set into a 25th anniversary artist. It sounds really nice in there.
Guest galejt Posted September 28, 2005 Posted September 28, 2005 I've got a pair (correctly now) in an all mahogany special, rosewood and a fat neck. Definitely a bright up from the BCR wind bridge which is welcome. The stock 60 neck is much darker and if he ever gets off vacation over there, I'll get a BCR neck wind too. The bridge is particularly vicious with gain. Me likey.
David B Posted September 28, 2005 Posted September 28, 2005 I have greg winds in my Black Standard Custom. Sounds Great / looks great!
tomteriffic Posted September 28, 2005 Posted September 28, 2005 A pair of Gregwind minibuckers are on their way to me, installed in an Eclipse. Since I also have a stock Eclipse, that should give me some kind of point of reference.
Guest Mike Lee Posted September 29, 2005 Posted September 29, 2005 Cajun,Did you try putting the original pickups back in your guitar before the Rio's? Were they JB/'59 or '59/'59?
thecajunboy Posted September 29, 2005 Posted September 29, 2005 Mike, I traded the original pickups to get the Voodoos in it.
RobB Posted September 29, 2005 Posted September 29, 2005 Replaced the DiMarzios in my DeanV with Voodoo '60s. Great improvement, though I kinda miss the Peter Green sound...It's been said that Voodoos favor lightweight guitars, Rios favor heavier ones.Who knows? Trust your own ears...
tombo Posted September 29, 2005 Posted September 29, 2005 Rios? Faggedaboudem. Schlbotnicks - The "Poe" wind. **THEY** are considered **IT.** You'll have to ask other members here about the Schlobotty website, I can't remember the URL. Try Google-ing it. Good tone ends there.
