mc2 Posted September 29, 2005 Posted September 29, 2005 Hamer Bigfoot sightings...rumoured to exist but rarely seen:There are supposedly some longscale SSI guitars floating around from 1987...Anyone have one or a photo of one?? Also...I know most all Californians are bolt-on but they made set-neck Calis on the doublenecks. Are there any single-neck Calis that were done as set-neck ?? Anyone own one or have pics?
silentman Posted September 29, 2005 Posted September 29, 2005 Yes there are set neck Calis. Stonge had one at one time and was selling. Don't know if it ever left the fold.
serial Posted September 29, 2005 Posted September 29, 2005 I had a really nice Cali Custom (set neck) that Stonge ended up with IIRC. Ice pearl. Very nice guitar. They were a regular catalog item, but you don't see 'em much.
mc2 Posted September 30, 2005 Author Posted September 30, 2005 Well...glad to see that I'm not crazy. It was my understanding that Cali Customs WERE set-neck axes and I remember reading that in an circa 1990 Hamer catalog. I've just seen a number of Califonians listed as "Customs" but the pix always seem to be bolt-ons, so I was starting to think I was wrong. Still would like to see pics of any set-neck Cali axes if anyone has one....AND WHAT ABOUT THE SUPPOSED EXISTANCE OF LONG-SCALE STEVE STEVENS I FROM THE 1987 PERIOD?? Has anyone ever seen one in the flesh??
kurtsstuff Posted September 30, 2005 Posted September 30, 2005 A very well known HFC'r has one or two of my set neck Cali's from days past....
serial Posted September 30, 2005 Posted September 30, 2005 I think that some of the confusion comes from Hamer's name game which started on the Calis. The original Cali came in two bolt-on trims, Californian (dots) and Californian Custom (boomers). IIRC, the set neck Custom came out in '89 or 90 and the former Custom (the bolt-on w/boomers) became the Elite. I had an '89 flamebody bolt on/boomers that was listed in the Hamer log book and printed on the warranty card as a Cali Custom.
hardheartedbill Posted September 30, 2005 Posted September 30, 2005 I'm pretty sure that the Eddie Martinez SS-1 w/ the leds, owned ( not sure about current status ) by Tonejunkee, is a 25.5" scale 21 fret bigneck, don't know if this was a one off or not

(2 boomers and offset dots, ebony board, EMGs....).
Jem Posted October 3, 2005 Posted October 3, 2005 Cali Deluxe's, if my memory serves at all, were Alder bodied instead of Mahogany and had just two boomerang's; one on the 5th and one on the 12th and mainly had EMG's from stock but i'm not totally 100% on that.Jem.
serial Posted October 3, 2005 Posted October 3, 2005 The Cali Deluxe came out in '90 or '91. Those also have a tone control unlike the other Calis.Don't ask me to trace the name lineage of the Sunburst, Sunburst Archtop, Artist, Archtop Artist, Studio, Studio Custom stuff!
