Double saddles

mc2

Question

Posted

OK...I have had double saddles on a couple of 8-string basses and do not really know what they do.

No one I have asked had an answer. So, I figured I'd run it by you guys.

My guess is that they lessen the tension on the string break angle and maybe are supposed to reduce string breakage?

Or maybe the two saddles are supposed to act as some sort of locking systen so the intonation does not shift, like using double nuts to lock a bolt in place?

They have never been adjusted in any similar fashion on any of the basses I have had them on, so I am assuming no one else had a clue about them either. What are they actually for and what is the prop[er way to set them up?

Here is a photo example...(a Veillette-Citron and a Warwick)

Looks to me like it's for individual intonation...

I DON'T mean the separate octave and root saddles.....LOOK CLOSE....EACH STRING has two saddles.

It is more obvious on the lower (Warwick) shot where they are spaced more evenly. But the top pic has the same thing but a couple are adjusted close or butted together.

You have a Veillette-Citron ?

Can we have a better pic of the whole guitar please.

I always wanted one of their guitars.

Well....I actually have Veillette-Cintron 8-string basses.

But here is a pic of some V-C guitars someone else owns (L to R: a baritone, a regular, a bass, a 12-string.) I had gotten offered a really nice flame maple w/ebony fingerboard V-C six-string about six months ago (like the one in this pic) by the original owner but it was bad timing and I passed.

Super nice, thanks for the pics!

Never played one but always thought they were distinctive looking and now you've got me thinking again..................
