Wiring 2 H/Bs to 1 Vol with push/pull coil split?

Victor (Fret Friend)

Question

Looked everywhere. Can find nothing. I am an electrical novice. I have a Cali with push/pull coil tap on 1 volume (no tone). Using single-coil HB in the neck & full HB in the bridge. Both 4-way wiring but nothing fancy. There's a 3 way toggle (8 solder pins).

Help much appreciated...

Thanks for that! I just need to figure out how the wires connect to a 3-way 8-pin (in a line) connector. Shouldn't be too difficult...

You mean, like this (click the Three-way option and the instructions appear)? The eight in a line arrangement should be the same as their four on a side arrangement, just spun around.

You mean, like this?

This: It was wired like this when I got the guitar. I'm gonna re-do the whole lot once I figure out what's what...

Tell you what! I've seen better. I just bought 3 rolls of cell cable (the thick 1 strand stuff). Got a luthier hobbyist friend coming over Saturday to help me out. Can't wait to hear what these new pickups sound like. If that HB is half as good as the Dimarzio it's gonna shred...

Never got to wiring the pickups in as I had too much to drink Friday in London. I'm gonna copletely strip the electrics & clean up the pot/selector ready for a complete re-wire. I'll be back here for advice & pics pror to re-wiring...

Need help again. I got a diagram but the guitar has an 8 terminal 3-way pickup selector (the diagram shows wiring for a 4+4). As my pal never got in contact with me, I'm gonna re-wire it myself. Gonna remove the push-pull & just use a normal pot. I can do the wiring for the pickups & the pot (from diagram) but I dunno how to config the 8 terminal (8 in a straight line NOT 4+4) pickup selector. I've been all over the net trying to find a diagram & I just can't seem to find one that's suitable.

I will have no players in here by this time tomoz so I NEED to get it fixed!

So, as help seems difficult to come by, I went on another search. Though I couldn't find the correct diagram, I did find an 8-point selector diagram on a Telecaster site. I have wired the pickups now & have prepared the selector & pot for final soldering (see pic). I soldered a small stip of wire to each of the terminals that need to be joined & I cleaned up the pot. Ideally, the pot would be 500 but I only have a 250k knocking about right now...

This is the first time I've really soldered & my first attempt at wiring a guitar...

The pic below is how the guitar looked when I bought it (eek)...

As you can see, it was a fkn mess...

I'll upload more pics to show my progress & completion later :)

You can throw that shit three way in the bin for a start !

You can throw that shit three way in the bin for a start !

haha, yeah, I know it's shit but I have no idea how to wire anything else

it will do for now - all my other guitars are in storage & i need a player - TODAY!

there was a push-pull coli split pot in originally but can i fk figure out the wiring

so long as i got bridge pickup & volume, I'm good (in fact i'm fkn good) :)

All wiring done to the volume pot & the pot is set. Just have to solder the 4 wires to the pickup selector now (the red one is earth - cos that was closest to me when i needed wire). I'll cut the red/white to length. The greens are the pickups hot-wire(s)...

Been a bit fiddly & my first go at wiring...

Sound like a fkn vacuum cleaner! Summats wrong! Is it possible I wired the ring/tip (input) wires the wrong way round?

Posted

Ahhh! Think I got it. The coloured wires on the bridge h/b are a different wiring system. I got wrong wires soldered. Ah well, let's have another go...

So. What type of 3-way selector should I have. Somethings not right with the wiring too.

You have a lot of options, here. You can get a standard 3-way (all parts, stew mac, etc) to work as a toggle for the two pups and put a push/pull knob in for the volume to activate the split coils.

Or, go with a Mega-switch (i think Stew Mac carries them) and get the options you are looking for.

For a two bucker guitar, this one is pretty nice:

Hey Jef... That switch looks cool, cheers!

I thought I may get away with this http://www.stewmac.com/shop/Electronics,_pickups/Components:_Switches_and_knobs/CRL_Lever_Switches.html?tab=Instructions I only just started soldering n stuff & no nothing about fancy stuff. I had a push/pull coil-split pot in the guitar but I can't figure out how to wire it so i gave up.

Having probs with the basic stuff. The bridge humbucker doesn't sound right & only 1 of the rails on the neck (single coil humbucker) is working. Gonna pull it all out again tomorrow & start again.

I might take you up on that 500k volume pot - I'll PM you tomorrow :)

A basic switch is fine, but it can get hairy to figure out how you put the tapped coils in - especially without a push/pull.

Check out the instruction page for the mega switch. It's really no harder to install than a standard switch - you just have to follow the wiring carefully.

Keep at it. You'll have a sense of accomplishment when it works. :)

I ordered 3! 12 bucks each or 8 bucks each for 3 or more. I can use the others in a Dean ML & an Ibanez RG...

Cheers Jef :)

Right, the neck pickup may be dodgy!!! but the shop sent me a new one. I've disconnected it anyway. I have sussed the wiring on the Bridge pickup :D and it's running just with that at the mo (with the neck pickup unsoldered).

The neck pickup hums until I separate the black wire from the ground??? I was connecting the black/bare & earthing them to the vol pot (this is the right way to do it) so I dunno why it's giving me jip. The red/white are joined. The HOT wire on the neck p-up is green.

My bridge pickup is same wiring as a SD so the HOT wire is black (the green/bare are earthed to the back of the vol pot) red/white are joined.

Now I need to figure out if the neck pickup is fkd & replace it with the new one + I need to figure out this buzz/hum. I know the black/bare should ground to the vol pot & the red/white are joined leaving the green HOT wire to the pickup selector.

This job should be much easier (probably). I'll come back later & check back to see if anyone has any ideas...

It's a single coil dual rail alnico5 humbucker (4 core + bare) - I'll post a pic in a few mins...
