DIY Website advice

Question

I have ZERO budget.

I do understand a bit about html and remember when a lot of ad boards required one to insert one's own html code, breaks, all that. Graduate of the ranchoweb.com html practice board which helped a lot when needing to do fancy listings in eBay. I also maintained my site on webrepeneur 2.0. yay.

What I need is a site that is not some kind of a come on for selling web design services. My budget is zero. I own the domain name through WhoIs.com and do not yet have a web hosting "server".

Where do I look for no bullshit step by step setup of a very basic webpage that simply makes me find-able? I can worry about fancy later.

I do not want to start out at Comcast (my ISP) unless I can do so using my domain name directly.

Thanks

weebly looks good. I'm using Google Sites for a new venture I'm working on. It has some useful traffic measurement tools. Not being scared of html is still a plus in case you want to really get into the weeds, but you could create a basic site with zero knowledge of anything.

I am very old-fashioned and hate dancing/scrolling/flashing images on sites. All you need is old HTML and you can get the commands easily from many online sources. Java is not really user friendly and youtube/google maps etc are easily embeded using old HTML codes.

For search engines you needs to do several things: have a META content command at the top of the page with keywords, submit your web address to Google (ESSENTIAL) and generate traffic so you rise up the search results. And get some links from other people's sites.

I learnt most of my HTML by looking at the SOURCE FILE in Internet Explorer which is just text with the codes. But that is no longer much use as many sites are full of the aforementioned JAVA script.

I hate HTML editors as they put in huge amounts of redundant code and it becomes a pain to amend or debug the files later.

All wisdom of the highest order. Exactly what I needed and a good lesson as to my dinosaur status. I shall put it to use upon returning from giving landlords a hard time down at the fun factory.

Anything Microsoft makes, yes. Frontpage = garbage. Word (save as web page) = garbage. DreamWeaver = Very cool. No extra code, fast and easy FTP with dependant file options. Back in the 90's I used Note Pad and typed up my own.

Maybe a book or two would help. With a book you don't have to worry about personal information harvesting, adware infections or getting put on spam lists.

If there's anything that gives you step-by-step building block procedures it's the "For Dummies" series.
