Speaker Substitution----Mesa Content

Question

I am thinking of making a few changes.. I recognize that the Mesa Nomad seems to have a lot of distractors, but it does seem to work well for me.....

I have a Nomad 45 2 x 12 in a great hardwood cab/wicker grill. It came (to me) with 2 Celestion Anniversary G12H (30 w) speakers. They are 8 ohm, wired in parallel for 4 ohms resistance.

Here is the question.....I THINK the "American" tube variation is more to my liking. Toward that end, I just picked up a Nomad 55 with the 2 C-90 speakers, 16 ohm wired in parallel to result in 8 ohms.

My THOUGHT was to simply swap the amps into the opposite cabinets. That would leave me with a 55 watt 6L6 setup in the nicer cabinet with what (I am given to believe) are "superior" speakers. If all that works out, I may then just sell the black tolex 45 watt 2 x 12.

Any thoughts on the best way to match every thing up? Comments upon your preferences between the 2 different speakers and their characteristics?

I should mention I am more interested in the range of clean(ish) to bluesy to "traditional" Mesa sounding (Santana-ish) sounds.......Which I am happy with using the available 3 channels, all in the "vintage" modes. I do not need to go to "extremes" for over the top modern gain. That is, beyond the "Black Magic Woman" or "Still Got The Blues" type of tones.

BTW, I also have a Mesa Blue Angel 1 x 12. I was not real happy with the C-90 in that. Changed out for a V-30 and I like it a lot better. Also, I then took that C-90 and put it into a 1 x 12 extension cabinet. I think it sounds better there than it did in the combo amp. Go figger......

TIA!

I like the celestion g12h30s in almost everything I've heard them in . running the amp @ 4 ohm may give a little difference in tone ? gain may be a little different , & being aware that the amps already running at 4 ohms would be my only concern . my take on all of this tone stuff is that nothins written in stone & you wont know till ya listen.

I got nothin so do the swap and report back with sound clips before and after. :D

Seriously though, I just looked in my nomad 100 combo and have the Black Shadow in there (1x12). On the magnet it says, "Type MC-90," is that the same speaker? Mine is 8 ohms. I was thinking of swapping mine out as well. I have a Vintage 30 and a GT-75 in another cab to swap but those projects normally just frustrate me. I also have an Egnater 1x12 ported (thiele?) extension cab I could toss the MC-90 in.

So on the next rainy day I may have a project too.

what I remember about the black shadow's was a loose squishy low end . I change my boogie to celestion g1275 in the 80s & thought it sounded better than the bs. I now have a vintage jbl k120 in it which sounds totally different ( great for clean & when used w/ pedals ) ( dont use the pre-amp od much , creamy santana od , not my thing )

Those Anny G12h30s are excellent speakers. My next amp acquisition may very well be a Marshall 2061 20 watt head, and if it is, it will be pushing 1 or 2 G12h30s....
