Checkerboard Special Nut width

What is the standard nut width for a 1981 checkerboard Special? Mine has a serial number of 1 3371 if it makes a difference

mine are all right around the 1 9/16 mark

The string spacing is Gibson... if your nut is too wide, you just sand down the sides.

that wont work on my specials..none are gibson nut spacing...the spacing has to be less or both E strings wont be on the frets

Don't fool with it. Get a new nut that's cut properly. There's more to it than just trimming to proper width. Pay da luthier.

If you insist on DIY, if you don't already have a copy, get a copy of Dan Erlewine's Guitar Player Repair Guide.

There are no shortcuts. There are no get out of jail free cards. Read the book.

My experience? If you are a gringo just pay da man. When you add it up it's cheaper to pay somebody who knows what they are doing. And your family won't have to listen to you cursing in the basement.
