Alternatives to or modifications for Schaller Mini Tuners?

Question

Hey guys,

I'm not digging the Schaller minis on my Hamer Standard. The keys themselves are small, and for whatever reason the mechanism on these is very tight, and not smooth, and when you add the small size of the keys, it's a pain.

I've tried loosening the adjustment screw for the keys, which helps a little but the mechanisms themselves still seem really tight on these. My old Studio Custom had full-size Schallers that I never had a problem with, so I don't know what's up.

Any suggestions for workarounds or alternatives?

A. I would reach out to schaller, they are very approachable and understanding, esp when it comes to there products.

B. Avoid sperzels, they will change the "tone" of your guitar, and not in a good way.

C. see A.

Thanks murkat! That's good to know about the Schaller folks. I'll shoot them an email. And good to know your experience with the Sperzels too. I've liked those on a strat I have to say.

I actually really like the recent TonePros Klusons on a few of my Gibsons. They're very smooth and look great. If it weren't prohibitively expensive, I might be tempted to cobble together a set of six-in-a-line and put them on the standard. I've seen one or two guys do that, and it's a cool look.

Educate me on that one - I have Sperzels on my Strat and Tele - in what way do they change tone??

Thanks!

Sperzels are made out of aluminum.  Aluminum that has not been hardened.

They do not transfer headstock string vibration as well as steel post/ steel machined tuners.

In my opinion.

Thanks - I'll try something different and see what happens...
