Budda Superdrive

Montelovesco

Question

Posted

I am thinking about changing my amp/gear - three channels are simply too much, I barely use two. I am looking for good cleans and mid range gain, not so the high gain mid scoop type. And I loooove pedals.

I found some Budda Superdrives (30/45, combos and heads) for what seems a reasonable price. Any experiences/suggestions/look outs you can share?

Muchos gracias!

Go with a 30, the 45 made me tingle in all the special area's but its just too loud and not usable for the normal guy. The 18 is more open than the 30 but the 30 is a killer amp. Channel one is a great pedal platform and channel two gets that great vintage grind with the master all the way open. It was and still is one of my favorite amps and its resides not to far from me. I still have visitation rights. ;)

If you can get a 1x12 combo make sure it has the Budda Phat Speaker. IMHO it is part of the sound. I also used Ceramic Tone Tubby's and the WGS Reaper HP or Retro 30 would be a great choice.

Where's HOBOMAN?

I've had a Superdrive II 18 watt combo (Pre Peavey) for around 8-10 years and it's remained a favorite. A ton of amps have come and gone but couldn't ever bring myself to get rid of it. It's a very versatile amp and extremely lightweight too, great clean, slight breakup tones too. You can get some nice dirty tones by cranking up the clean channel volume. The drive channel is great. The only downside is that it goes through power tubes quicker than any other amp I've had before, usually get a year out of a set. Really nothing bad to say about it. It can get super loud for an 18 watt amp and even though with it's low wattage it's hard to get a really quiet great tone. It doesn't have to be ear bleeding but not super quiet either. For example my 40 watt Splawn Street rod is much easier to get real low volume tones that sound great.

I've had an 18 for years that I'm only looking to sell because I've gone all-modeling.  It's a great amp.  At the time I was interested in a Tiny Terror and the Budda was better in every way except size:  3 band EQ, switchable channels, and an effects loop.

Built well, sounds great.  What's not to love?
