robberns Posted October 26, 2021 Posted October 26, 2021 Wondering if anyone knows what value the stock pots are in a Talladega? Both pots say "Hamer FR8526 0642" on them. I'd have to disconnect the pickups from them to measure but figured I'd ask. Also wondering about he stock 4-way blade selector in terms of wiring. I'm replacing the Duncan DD P90's with some Fralin Noiseless P90's (humbucker-sized) so the pickups are coming out eventually anyway. Fralin recommends 500K pots for those pickups. TIA.
Hbom Posted October 29, 2021 Posted October 29, 2021 I wasn't smart enough to buy a Talladega when I could/should have. So can't really answer your question. But I did stay in a Holiday Inn once. So I can tell you that I bought some NOS Hamer branded pots from Kim Keller in '17 that were listed as Hamer 500K Potentiometers 1997-2014. They are CTS pots marked on the back HAMER FR8526 0814. On my meter they measure: 437,442,442, 443, 452, and 454 I would guess they are similar to what's in your Talladega Doug
robberns Posted October 29, 2021 Author Posted October 29, 2021 Thanks Doug, I was able to measure the tone pot and it appears to be 553. I'm going to leave the originals in and see how the Fralin P90's sound once I get them installed.

I’m most interested in how the P90 neck pickup compares to the stock DD neck pickup. LOVE that neck DD in my Tally. Also, what was your question on the 4-way switch? It does individual bridge and neck and then combo in both series and parallel. I find that the bridge/neck in parallel works great for some low gain/edge of breakup rhythm and the bridge/neck in series gives some nice creamy lead tones. But my all time favorite sound from the Talladega is the neck DD lead tone with medium gain. A little noisy as any single coil/p90 will be but DAMN does it sound sexy…

I guess the Tally's Double Ds needed the extra.

robberns Posted November 2, 2021 Author Posted November 2, 2021 Funny, the neck DD is not my flavor of choice. Sounded too dark to me. I had replaced that with a Fralin P92 years ago. But I'm growing weary of the single coil buzz so I am trying a set of humbucking P90's in neck and bridge. I have a wiring diagram from Fralin on the 4-way blade. I'll report back once I get them installed. I'll stash the original DD's in the case for the next caretaker.
robberns Posted November 10, 2021 Author Posted November 10, 2021 Operation No-Noise was a success. I put a set of Fralin Hum-Cancelling P90's in my Tally, and they are in fact, quiet as they purported to be. Guitar sounds much better to me and the pickups blend well together. While I had the guitar opened up I also installed a treble-bleed to the volume pot and a PIO cap to the tone pot. Took down a couple of high frets, re-crowned and polished them and this is better than new.
