Maybe they're going by what their spouses/significant others told them...which may be truthful or not.  "Oh, that's not a new guitar, I've had that here for years."    

IIRC, I think the term that was used here on the HFC now and then for this color (polite version) was 'Baby Poop Yellow-Green', depending on how it aged over the years.
