It can't happen, but it did...

Question

Posted

So, our first gig with the new bass player.  Our previous guy passed away five weeks ago and was with us for over 35 years, so it was a challenging day to begin with.  I know some of you that know my sense of humor here on the forum will tell me we were haunted.  So, I've already considered that as a hypothesis.

Seriously, the bass player sent me a direct 1/4" to our Line6 Soundstage board.  Our keyboard player sends me a "Main out" from his stage mixer consisting of five keyboards.  He uses a Roland keyboard stage amp.

HOW COULD THE BASS BE COMING OUT OF THE KEYBOARD PLAYER'S STAGE MONITOR/AMP?????

To remedy, we had the bassist play a little louder on stage than we'd like and I took the direct directly to the Sub.  Worked okay, but I like a little bass in the mains too.

Any serious ideas?  Hmmm.

Humor is welcomed.  It's been a tough month.

I know.  I know.  But it happened.  I replicated it over and over for all the band members, so they'd think I wasn't crazy.

Monitor and effects busses off on the bass channel? Not inserted to the channel effects insert? Just a couple things I'd look for in the 1st 30 seconds. It's getting folded back somewhere!

First, check to see exactly which busses are feeding which monitors. For instance, if the bass player's signal is coming into your mixer on an input channel and being bussed to his monitor, make sure it isn't also being bussed to the keyboard player's monitor. Depending on which mixer you're using, it could be that a dual buss (3+4) switch is engaged instead of 2x mono busses (bus 3 or bus 4). If your mixer is a digital board, there can sometimes be software issues that creep-in causing the signal routing to go all screwy. Re-booting the console sometimes fixes the problem... but sometimes, like with my old Soundcraft 328, it doesn't. :P

If everything looks alright and the bass player's signal is still coming through the keyboard player's monitors, try patching the bass into another open channel (if you have one) and then, route his signal accordingly and see if the problem persists.
