Cboss Posted December 14, 2023 Posted December 14, 2023 Wondering what everyone thinks of these guitars.. does the Floyd kill a lot of tone that would otherwise be there?
Jimbilly Posted December 15, 2023 Posted December 15, 2023 I've had one for very nearly 30 years, it needed a headstock repair (common). I've never played it very much, partly because it doesn't sit as well on my lap as others, and I could never bring myself to drill a hole for a 'proper' strap button, so it's just a bit uncomfortable to play. I always forget how the switches work, but both forward or both back are good enough. Mine is probably more of a trophy for a SS fan at this point, which is fine. I'll dig it out, and play it today, and get a photo, I thought for sure I had a photo, it must be on an old dead computer. My SS2, however: my favorite guitar of all time. And I'm thinking of my Proto ii as the SS zero, which I also reach for quite a bit nowadays (I just use 2 pickup switch positions on that one too, both forward or both back). I still would love to find a SS3 for a good price, I'll keep looking. And I do like my Centaura, which is further down that SS evolutionary path. As for killing of the tone, it sounds like other Floyded guitars to me.
Cboss Posted December 15, 2023 Author Posted December 15, 2023 Thank you! I love my prototype too, the sounds out of that guitar are just amazing, and I do find it very comfortable What did they change on the two that made it so much better for you?
Jimbilly Posted December 15, 2023 Posted December 15, 2023 It must be largely my imagination, the differences are pretty subtle. I did have some trouble with the tuning on the SS1 ages ago, I think the headstock repair fixed that. The proto and the 1 are 24 3/4, the 2 is 25.5, the 2 is not a whole lot of serial numbers higher than the 1. The 1 and 2 have headstock repairs, the proto has a scratch that looks like a broken headstock or repair, but it is still intact. The 2 does have hole rubbed in the paint from a forearm, it was like that when I got it. That's just glare on the 1. I'll plug the 1 in a bit later today. wouldn't a Proto custom have been cool!
Cboss Posted December 15, 2023 Author Posted December 15, 2023 Holy shit that copper one is gorgeous! Ebony board? I'll have to try to find one of those, I like the look of that a lot better than the ss1.. here is my Proto 2

Jimbilly Posted December 15, 2023 Posted December 15, 2023 The copper one had been sitting in little music store in Seattle (I'll remember the name later) for $299 irrc, 25 years ago? It was known about, someone posted here or told me about it, and I certainly had to drive up to get it. - the good old days!

Cboss Posted December 15, 2023 Author Posted December 15, 2023 Dibs on the copper ss2 please if you ever decide to part with it
Jimbilly Posted December 16, 2023 Posted December 16, 2023 It seems like the strap button is the only thing that really bugs me about the ss1, I guess I will have to put Dunlops on there, and drill that hole in the upper end. It really seems like it should have normal strap button placement.
Cboss Posted December 16, 2023 Author Posted December 16, 2023 A lot of the ones I see for sale have a button on the horn and a hole on the back
scottcald Posted December 17, 2023 Posted December 17, 2023 I have an SS 1 in black but no crowns. It's a great guitar with great sounds. Not sure why they didn't just do a 5 way blade switch. I do feel the 6 in line headstock looks way better than the 3x3 on the prototype. And I agree about the strap button thing. Wonder if they tried that for Steve and he didn't like it?
Cboss Posted December 18, 2023 Author Posted December 18, 2023 I see on the ss2 it's back on the upper horn...these seem pretty rare
tommy p Posted December 20, 2023 Posted December 20, 2023 What would be the ballpark price range on an SS2 in good condition, non-original case?
