I’m always fearful of dealing with sellers in Japan. I did recently, but it was for a much less expensive item

These aren’t technically sellers - they’re auction speculators.  Not sure why eBay allows them, but…here we are.  I’m still most likely that none of the people listing the bass (or item) actually have it in their possession.  They copy the photos, description and set a price.  If a seller buys it now or is the high bidder, they attempt to purchase the bass/item and then score a profit.  In the case where the bass/item has already been sold, they simply cancel the sale/auction and return the money.  
 

The auction sites are flooded with these speculators and copycats.  Weird business model.

Yea, this bass is at a local secondhand shop.  It's about $2300 there at the current JPY/USD rates, if you want to get a feel for what the margins are like.
