Fretboard Preference
59burst replied to Nathan of Brainfertilizer Fame's topic in Hamer Fan Club Messageboard
I have 3 maple, 1 pao ferro, 2 ebony, 2 rosewood. The 3 maples all feel really different because one's nitro, one's glossy poly, and one's satin poly. The nitro is a Nash, and I wish the back didn't have any finish rubbed off because the finish has no tack or stickiness at all and feels great. New nitro is sticky as crap though, but maple is going to have the most variation due to the different finishes. The other 3 types, I notice the difference in looks a lot more than any difference in feel. How would I know if they sound different-they're all on different style guitars. Rosewood has the most grain-the others are tight grained. Ebony is the slickest and probably hardest. Do I prefer one over the other? Depends on the guitar, but in general for the darker woods, not really. -
That's cool-also one of the reasons I took up guitar. Kiss was my first band that I was a real fan of-I had one Alice Cooper album that I really liked but when i got Alive II, it was over. I was just recently dubbing an old Ace solo lp onto cd-forgot that the songs actually rocked. That would be a tough one to turn down but if you'd be a tech/roadie, as someone coming off his second hernia surgury, I can understand not doing that.

...amp that I don't need pedals to get overdrive I'm happy with.

Hamer Brand Loyalty
59burst replied to Nathan of Brainfertilizer Fame's topic in Hamer Fan Club Messageboard
I think it would be strange to limit oneself to just one brand of guitar. I only have one Hamer, a mid '90's Studio. It's my best playing guitar. I have: '80 Les Paul Suhr Classic American strat Nash Tele Warmoth Tele '80's Kramer If I didn't already have 2 strats and 2 teles I'd be interested in a T-51 and a strat style Hamer (can't recall model). I play the Hamer more than the Lester-it weighs about half as much. I'd love a Korina V. I got into Hamers kind of late so most of my arsenal was already bought, otherwise I'd probably have a few more. I've always liked the studios-I remember a GP review from '93 or so and I've wanted one ever since. They mentioned what a bargain it was back then-unfortunately, the new ones aren't so cheap anymore. -
Conan and Slash shop for guitars on Craigslist

Funny. I caught the tail end of it last night-good to see the whole thing. I'm not sure that second guy knew who they were-no reaction at all. -
The highest price you've paid for a CD?
59burst replied to zorrow's topic in Hamer Fan Club Messageboard
About $30 for the Badlands "Dusk" Japanese import cd and upper $20's for the first cd of theirs, which are all out of print. Well worth it-great stuff. I bought their second cd for $10 on ebay, maybe because it was a Bmg copy, but who cares? -
Okay, maybe I f'd up and got my loosening and tightening mixed up. It's actually adjusted fine now, but I think it actually needed to be loosened instead of tightened, in which case turning counter-clockwise would be the right way to go. What Veatch said clued me in to my mistake-it was actually backbowed a little due to climate changes and I wanted some relief, which I got by loosening, but I got it in my head I was tightening. Anyway, thanks for the help-good thing I only turn a little at a time.

Hmm, according to this it sounds right-I turned toward the treble strings to tighten and add bow - after trying it the other way, which I considered clockwise. My Fenders all are modern ones with the adjustment at the headstock (actually two non-fenders are on the other end), but at the headstock on those, I turn the allen wrench the other way. So as long as I'm turning toward the treble strings I'm tightening the rod on the Hamer, yes? That's how mine worked. But I still see that as counter-clockwise..
-
No, I've done Fenders a bunch of times-this one's backwards. Are the imports different by any chance? Mines a U.S. one unless there's some funny business going on. It's a '95 I think-serial numbers indicate the correct year for a wraparound tailpiece. Says Hamer Studio with USA in small letters next to it. Were there ever any wraparound tailpiece imports? Maybe I'm just being paranoid-just seems wierd that it's backwards.
-
Are they backwards? I had a little backbow and turned it clockwise and it got worse, then turned it counter-clockwise and it added relief. Are they backwards from Fenders? I don't think I've ever adjusted any of my Gibsons so I don't know which way they turned but I assumed it was the same as Fender.

Yeah, that one's in the new Total Guitar-scary chords for a rocker like me. Merry Axemas everyone. -
Your best Hamer purchase 2007 - with pics!
59burst replied to Sentinel's topic in Hamer Fan Club Messageboard
My Only Hamer I bought this year. Actually, my second-my first was an '80's Standard with a repaired (badly) headstock break that I loaned a friend $50 for with the guitar as collateral. I gave him back the guitar when he paid me $25. He still owes me the other $25. Oh, well, can't add my pic as an attachment. It's a '96 I think Studio with a wraparound in natural flame. -
The PRS SC245 uses the new PRS SC245 pickups (a new model). PRS SC Trems use the #6s. You're right about the 245 pickups: they are pretty low output PAF type pickups. Duncan wise, you're probably looking at regular 59s. If you really want to nail it though, you can probably hunt down a pair of the 245 pickups or if you're willing to go boutique, try the WCR Crossroads. Thanks for the info. A '59 might be worth a try or a Gibson '57 plus, BBQ, Alnico II pro, or Pearly Gates. The problem is, it's hard to distinguish between all these similar pickups from soundclips. The SC245 sounded great but I was playing through a Marshall Dsl which I don't own (maybe someday), but it was way better sounding than the SC250 and a few others I tried. Anyone have any preferences between these-I guess I should add the Burstbuckers and Seth Lovers too-the WCR's are way expensive-not looking to spend that much, although I'm sure they sound great.

Good thread since I'm considering replacing my JB in my Studio. I'm adding the Custom Custom to my potential list. I really liked the pickups in the PRS Singlecut 245 if anyone knows what type those are or what would be a close match for them-I'm guessing very PAF'ish. The JB's too bright for me in this guitar-I want fat LP tones with a bark-not tooo dark, just not overly bright. Allmans, Mule, Zep, etc. Is the CC a good match? Are Studio's naturally bright guitars?

No, maybe I should rephrase that-does Bbob live in the Atlanta area? I like to check out guitars before I buy-never bought through the mail before. -
