marcnorth Posted May 21, 2006 Posted May 21, 2006 This guys had this one on ebay for quite a while now. Nice bass but he wants a little too much for it.http://cgi.ebay.com/Rare-American-Hamer-B8...1QQcmdZViewItemHere's a nice 8 string Standard that's short scale. The gold top B8S on the same page is gone.http://www.rockcityguitar.com/rc/items.asp?.r=20327396&p=3
cmatthes Posted May 21, 2006 Posted May 21, 2006 THat guy's USED B-8s goes for almost as much or as much as a new one.
marcnorth Posted May 22, 2006 Posted May 22, 2006 That's not a bad idea, just order a new one. It's reasonable and you can get what you want in the color you want.
jclasen Posted May 22, 2006 Author Posted May 22, 2006 I used to own 0287.It was the black short scale with Dimarzios that is displayed at http://www.8stringbass.com/MainFrames.html.It was stolen with a bunch of other gear back in the early part of 1989.I have spent much time trying to locate it, having come close, but not close enough to recovering it a couple of years ago.I contacted Hamer about making another one. They want $3265 to make a new one. That's a little bit beyond my budget. What do you think the chances are of finding it again?I have hestitated getting the cops involved.Yes, there is a stolen goods report on it.But, if I could find it, or another 8-string, I would pay the going rate. Are the later ones as good as the one I had?Don't know as I haven't seen any in person for quite a while.
mc2 Posted May 22, 2006 Posted May 22, 2006 Yeah, a real shame that you spotted that one just after it was resold again and vanished. Hopefully it'll turn up again. Regarding the feel of the early B8S to the newer ones...Most of the early ones had the same Gibson-ish chunky bass feel to the necks, although one I had actually had more of a "V" carve ot the neck. After Hamer went to the dual-truus rod set-up in the 8-string necks, they got wider and somewhat flatter -- basically using the B12S necks from the more popular 12-string bass version and just omitting an extra octave tuner from each string on the headstock. Still a decent feel to them (althougn I do wish Hamer had a separate 8-string profile rahter than just use the 12.)The best feeling of the Hamer 8-strings, to me, are some of the mid-to-late '80s ones that still had the single truss rod but were a bit slimmer than the late-70s ones, like your's would have been.If you ever opt for ordering a new one, you can get Hamer to do a custom neck profile to your specs or another neck that you like for a small upcharge.
SirDouglas Posted May 22, 2006 Posted May 22, 2006 I have the gold top b8s... if yer interested you can have it for what i paid for it.. $1600 plus shipping...shoot me an email if yer intersted and ill send ya pics of it Randy
cmatthes Posted May 22, 2006 Posted May 22, 2006 I contacted Hamer about making another one. They want $3265 to make a new one. That's a little bit beyond my budgetThat is the LIST price. Dealer discount is SIGNIFICANTLY cheaper than that.SirDouglas' is a great deal either way for a cool custom version of that bass. The newer ones are superior in that they have dual trussrods, whereas the older versions had a single rod and many were subject to warping/neck stress.
serial Posted May 22, 2006 Posted May 22, 2006 Is that the one that was at a guitar shop in Chicago about 8 years ago or so? I remember email exchanges w/someone who was looking for a black 8 string and I'd seen it in VG Mag. Why wouldn't you go to the police? If you have a police report, the bass is yours.
jclasen Posted May 23, 2006 Author Posted May 23, 2006 serial,Yes, that email exchange was with me. Following your leads, I traced it to the guitar store in Skokie, but they said that while they had sold the bass, it was a consignment job and they had no records related to it. Right.I later missed its sale on ebay by about a year.
serial Posted May 23, 2006 Posted May 23, 2006 Good luck tracking that one down. Shoot me an email at "serialsteve79@hotmail.com" and I'll add your email to the stolen Hamer registry so if it turns up, I can letcha know.
jclasen Posted May 24, 2006 Author Posted May 24, 2006 I searched around and found an old photo. Yes, that's me. Please ignore the stupid haircut and skinny tie. I had a new real-life job and came to the bar straight from work. Besides, skinny ties were in then... Ok, maybe not. The rather unique picking style was due to the fact that I had broken the knuckle on my right pinkie finger the night before. It was the only way i could play without much pain.
cmatthes Posted May 28, 2006 Posted May 28, 2006 Cool bass - hope you get it back! NO apologies about the skinny ties...that was "in" for a very short period of time in the early '80s. The pic below was from '83, I think:
jclasen Posted May 28, 2006 Author Posted May 28, 2006 c,That looks amazingly like most of the clubs I ever played.Nice Rick! I had a 72' in Midnight Blue or whatever they called it.It was stolen at the same time as the Hamer.I found an almost identical '82 model and cleaned it up.That's one of the basses I use now.Your tie looks better than mine, and I have to admit that my photo was probably taken in '85. A little past the early 80's when thin ties were in.John
