David B Posted August 31, 2008 Posted August 31, 2008 Cool guitar. I've been looking for one of those.
tc2 Posted August 31, 2008 Posted August 31, 2008 I personally LOVE checking, nicks, patina.... nothing like an old Gibson with weather checking. Grecos kick ass.
murkat Posted August 31, 2008 Posted August 31, 2008 Attention, attention, will Currypowder please go to the ebay link......
currypowder Posted August 31, 2008 Posted August 31, 2008 Thanks, Murkat, I've seen it. I was hoping, you know, since it's my birthday and all, that you were going to succumb to my pressure and just send me yours out to me. You know, I have a "Greco Explorer" search set up on ebay, and never got any notification that this was up there. I'm glad the HFC is on top of things.
murkat Posted August 31, 2008 Posted August 31, 2008 you mean this really clean one? What pressure? this 78' is a keeper and sounds killer with the stock pups after I potted them. Great guitars.
The Shark Posted August 31, 2008 Posted August 31, 2008 Potting the pickups is a must! They do sound really good. Very undervalued guitars and I hope they stay that way!
murkat Posted September 1, 2008 Posted September 1, 2008 all right! good for you man! get some pics up when you get, if you need some parts, lmk.jay
currypowder Posted September 2, 2008 Posted September 2, 2008 It's on its way to me from Japan as we speak. My experience with shipping from Japan has been that it will arrive quicker than shipping from California. Hopefully it won't get delayed in Customs. These older black bound and crowned Greco's are pretty hard to find, even though they were a standard model in the late 70's early 80's. Every since murkat got his, I've been looking. As long as this one's solid, I'm not too worried about the cosmetic condition. I'll probably try to buff out most of the scratches on the top. Worst case I'll see about getting the top only refinned. I'll let you guys know when it gets here. Thanks for the heads up.
currypowder Posted September 5, 2008 Posted September 5, 2008 3 days from Japan. Amazing shipping time. However, I'm surprised it arrived in one piece. No case. It had bubble wrap around the body and headstock, but no other packing, it was just rattling around in the box. The box had a big hole and a couple of significant dents, so I was a bit worried. And, to top it off, my name and address had rubbed off the shipping label, it's there but very faint. Someone had put a small label with "try Greg Curry", and my address on it. Someone at the PO gets a big deposit of karma from me!At the end of the day, though, it got here safe and sound. It looks as I expected, scratched and beat, but pretty damn cool. I think a good buffing will get rid of half or more of the scratches, so at some point in the near future, I'll probably give it a try. However, all of the electronics work just fine and the neck seems to be pretty straight (maybe a little adjustment needed). So for now, I'm going to remove the 10 year old strings, clean up the fretboard a bit, re-string it, set it up more to my liking, and rock out. I may even take it to my gig tonight. The neck is a medium thin. The frets are in better shape than I expected based on the auction (which said 65%). Not enough wear to really do anything at this point. The rosewood board looks a little dry, but otherwise is in great shape and the inlay work is top notch.Although I'm not real happy with the packing, bottom line is it got her OK and it's exactly what I expected. It seems to be alot of guitar for $600!
Guest pirateflynn Posted September 5, 2008 Posted September 5, 2008 Whoa. Glad it arrived in one piece. I once had a guitar shipped to me wrapped only in bubblewrap. No box or case or anything else. Crazy. That's a cool guitar!
